Update on one of our own going pro. Man Skirt!

It's great to see you succeed. I have also enjoyed your videos, especially the part you step over an open kettle wearing your skirt.....! As someone else commented on one of your vids: "Zero f#cks were given making this video!" Cheers!

    Keg line cleaning problem

Failing that you could always use CO2 to push Oxy/PBW out of a keg you are cleaning through the lines and then do the same with StarSan. Works well for me but then I don't have a monster kegerator like yours...

is this mold on my kombucha tea - pics

I just tested my kombucha with my new handy pH meter and it came out at 3.0. This is the same pH level as vinegar and is fairly acidic (beer is usually in the high 4s). The interesting thing, though is it doesn't taste sour but a little sweet with some light carbonation, almost like apple juice...

Ok if I made tea yesterday?

They say 3 tablespoons of distilled white vinegar will work as a starter if you don't have anything else. I haven't tried that yet but am keeping it mind if I get in a pinch.

kombucha virgin - first one not so good?

I'm brewing Kombucha now too. Scobies are, shall we be honest, gross. In fact, I hide it from my kids so they won't be afraid to drink the stuff. I had mold on my first scoby due to a too weak tea mixture and low temperatures. Your scoby is fine. Mold will be hairy and only on the surface. That...

is this mold on my kombucha tea - pics

A new scoby is formed from the mother and will grow in size until it covers the surface area of the container it is in. It looks scary as sh%t but the liquid underneath is good!

Not mold. Mold usually appears in circular shapes and is "hairy." RDWHAK.

    Sparging on the Grainfather

Wow. Very cool. I see you made a baby too. Busy times up north!

    Sparging on the Grainfather

AKbrew907, judging from your name you are clearly up in Alaska. Which part? I have friends in Homer, Cordova, Kodiak, etc. How do you manage fermentation temps?

    Sparging on the Grainfather

This is my method of sparging and on average takes 20 mins or so. I usually hit the Boil switch as soon as I lift the grain bucket up so we can work to the boil faster and I let the grain to continue dripping after I use all the sparge water until just before the boil. Might as well get every...

    Sparging on the Grainfather

The overflow inlet (part number 36) that fits onto the top of the overflow pipe in your photo is upside down. Just a friendly FYI.

Avoiding additional bitterness from Grapefruit zest

I just used the zest from two grapefruits from rubbing them on a cheese grater recently. I soaked it in vodka several days or so and then dumped it in the primary for a week in the Grapefruit Pulpin' clone I made. It was amazing: great grapefruit floral aroma and no bitterness at all. I think...

    Water Adjustments for Pizza?

As someone who grew up in California and lived in New York I am able to see both sides to this story and my view is: the pizza is BETTER in New York. No question. Chicago's take on pizza is totally different, almost like another category and I don't think you can compare it with the others. To...

    Calling Dr. Kelvin

So I have been wondering if I could drop a hook into the deep talent pool out there on a question regarding temperature. Specifically, I have been wondering when I cold crash how do I get the quickest result? For example, if I want my fermenting vessel internal temp to be 35F (1-2C) and it is...

    Clogged Keg Dip Tube

Yup. Purge the empty keg with CO2 first and very carefully siphon the beer into it. I make sure the siphon hose lies at the bottom of the keg so it is quickly covered by beer and hope that this results in less bubbling/agitation of the precious liquid. When done I spray Star-San on the keg...

    Clogged Keg Dip Tube

I just went through this with a dry-hopped in secondary IPA. The first thing I suggest you do is release all pressure in the keg. Take a small wrench and unscrew the "Out" post. If beer or foam starts to come out as you are unscrewing it then just open up the keg to release all pressure. Take...

    Keg bottling temp?

Interesting. I am now kegging and bottling all my brews. The good stuff I give away (kiwis love free beer). The not so good I have to drink. I have two cases of that staring at me on the floor of my study right now; a Wee Heavy and a Vanilla Porter. I was wondering how long the beer would go...

    Keg bottling temp?

This is scientifically proven but I would like to know what others have experienced here as far as shelf life of filled bottles outside the fridge. I, like the OP, do not have space to put my bottles in the fridge (and the wife won't allow it) so I am keeping them in bottle boxes on the floor of...
