for secondary "fermentation" of a 5 gallon batch? Is the excess air going to have a chance to oxidize the beer? Is a 5 gallon carboy better or needed?

and I am still a little confused about cleaning and sanitizing. I have StarSan to use for the sanitizing, but can it be used as a cleaner too? Should I just use some oxyclean and let the equipment soak in that and then rinse it out, then use the starsan?

I saw a video where they take the sample of wort after the yeast is pitched, place it in a beer bottle with a paper towel stuffed in the top. Then just pour the beer out of the bottle each time to test the SG as the week goes along. Rather than opening the bucket and continually taking samples.

Anybody here do a satellite fermentation in a beer bottle, rather than having to open the bucket over and over to keep getting SG readings?

Is something like PBW necessary to use as a cleaner, or just some soapy water and a sponge?

I am collecting bottles for my first brew. Most are the standard brown glass, some are Green Glass (Heineken) bottles. Any problems with using these bottles too?

I spoke with my LHBS about my first batch. They reccomended using the plastic bottling/fermenting bucket for the first 10 days or so. Then transferring to the carboy for the "secondary". If I am to use the the bottling bucket as the primary fermenter, what is the best way to clean it before...

What have you brewed with this kit? What have you used for primary and secondary fermenters?

I am not sure. Seems like that would work. I guess my question was about the bottling bucket being air tight with a spigot. The lid for the bucket has a hole with a gasket to put the airlock into.

7.8 gallon fermenting/bottling bucket and 6 gallon carboy. I am doing a Nut Brown Ale should I use the bucket 1st and then a week later into the carboy for 2 weeks?
