    Corny Source

Holy Hand Grenades, I had no idea Barley and Wine sold them for that little. I need to pick me up some fo sho. Are these the Ball Lock or Pin Lock? I saw them when I was there the other day sitting in front of the store, but I didn't look closely at the cost.

I'd come to your brew day if I wasn't brewing the first batch of my Covenantal Coffee Ale, myself. :) I'll let you know when my next one after this Saturday is, and keep me posted. If I can make it to a brew day of yours, I totally will. Lathrop isn't far at all. I'll hop on the motorcycle...

Oh, and I've never been much for meetings or dues. lol. So I was never interested in joining the Modesto Mashers. I do know that my Crazy Hamish Scotch Ale beat all of their offerings at the 2008 Hops and Bangers homebrew competition. :) In fact, when Dano showed up at my house last brew...

Would you be talking about Dano? :) Dude is bomb. He came to my last brew day and we enjoyed some awesome beer. I get all my stuff from Barley and Wine, when possible. The guys there are REALLY cool. Last time I went, he had a Pliny clone in the keg and offered me a sample. So awesome...

What difference does it make if I took my reading after I pitched my yeast?

If you pitched a smack pack, I can't imagine it makes enough of a difference. if you pitched an entire 1 quart starter, I STILL can't imagine it makes that much of a difference in gravity, since the starter was probably something like 1.048 or so. If you decanted, little to no difference...

That is a kickass setup! And gorgeous tap handle!

Mash tun manifold or SS braid?

Not sure what you're saying, but the more uniform throughout the bottom of the cooler, the better for fly sparging. Hey, find what works for you, and have a homebrew. How much more efficiency do you want? I'd like 100%, thanks. Barring that, I'll take the most I can get for the least amount...

Mash tun manifold or SS braid?

Don't know if you saw cperry7467's reply, but it answers the question. If you've got your braid in a loop, it'll be better, but still not as good as a false bottom or manifold. Essentially, if you're pulling your mash liquor from a single braid in the center of your cooler, you'll create a...

    Which kit for beginners?

Oh yeah! +1 to this. A wort chiller is so freaking much nicer than trying to do an ice bath. If you're doing a full boil, you'll want 50' of coiled copper tubing in your chiller.

Mash tun manifold or SS braid?

+1 I'll only add that if you PLAN to move to fly sparging, go to the effort of making the manifold. Less work down the road. If you have no interest in fly sparging, then go with the braid. I went with the braid and loved it. I'm looking at moving to fly sparging, which makes my braid...

    Not-so-new brewer in CA

Oh yeah, how could I forget our neighbors to the north? lol. I'm in Central California, near Modesto.

    Which kit for beginners?

If you're pretty sure you're gonna love brewing (and you sound like you are), I'd invest in some decent equipment. Pot/Kettle - You didn't mention what size of a pot you currently have, but if it's less than 7 gallons, you'll probably want to get something bigger. You need the headroom for...

    Not-so-new brewer in CA

Hey all. I've done some posting here, but have gotten a LOT of great tips and tricks from lurking and searching, so thank you all in advance! Just thought I'd introduce myself. I've been brewing for something like 7 or 8 years, but only infrequently. Started out with a 2-bucket kit my wife...

Mash Tun with stainless steel braided weave hose

I've got a much smaller braided steel screen, and I've never had a lautering problem. However, I'm considering using John Palmer's method of making a loop of a braided hose as an upgrade. (Either that, or I'll just buy a nice false bottom and a rotating sparge arm...) lol

    First AG Brew Day

I had roughly the same problem and figured out a couple problems. For one, my mash temp spiked for who knows how long. Wasn't paying attention while the mash was going, and inadvertently had heat on the bottom. Too high of a mash means less fermentable sugars being produced from the...

    Covenantal Coffee Ale

This is a beer I have not yet had the chance to brew, but am planning to do so in the next month or so. It is based off my memories of a coffee brown I had in Juneau at Alaska Brewing Co., which they said they'd never distribute. :( So I put together this recipe using BrewR for Android along...

    New keggle smells?

I didn't even think about the weird smell making its way into my beer. I was pretty new to brewing at the time. Seems such a "duh" thing to me now.

    New keggle smells?

When my keggle was first made, the dude who made it drilled holes in the cut out lid and plumbed it for a false bottom for mashing. It was neat, but I had the same burnt metal smell. I didn't do what you guys were trying to do, and the oatmeal chocolate stout I made had a metallic flavor that...

Hazelnut Coffee Ale - I'm doin' it!!!

I am curious as to how this turns out as well, mostly for how well the coffee flavor comes across. I'm working on a Coffee-Brown myself, as I had a FANTASTIC one at Alaskan Brewing Co. in Juneau back in '08. (Will never be bottled...I wept.) I've been wondering how I'd add the coffee, and for...
