    Cider w/ Wyeast 4184: She'd dead Jim!

Well, I've given up. Made cider last fall, five gallons using WLP775, five gallons with Wyeast 4184 'Sweet Mead'. Fermented side by side, same process, same temp same everything except yeast. The 4184 is wretchedly cursed with h2s. I've racked four times, forced carbed via the "out" tube on my...

Keggle construction and ensuing brain fart

You'd be absolutely fine picking up a brass plug from your local HD or Lowes.

Where Can I Find This Part?

Two thoughts: I've dealt with kegkits for time to time and other than their annoying as hell emails, havent been dissappointed. As for the box, you can get those at Lowes, HD, etc.

    It's a sad, sad day

YES!! And now that I'm only doing no sparge I dont even have to wait for that. I blame methodology.

    It's a sad, sad day

    >> I usually wait until the boil is going. I'll try that next time. Not sure it would be healthy to go cold turkey!

    It's a sad, sad day

Today I'm going to do what I thought was the unthinkable -- tipping out my first ever batch of beer. Few weeks ago made EdWort's Haus Pale, a wonderful simple ale that is a serious crowd pleaser. Day was moving along just fine then I broke the cardinal rule of all grain brewing -- never...

    Fully Automated Brewery Senior Design

Question: had you ever considered RIMS rather than HERMS. Nothwithstanding the fact that wars have been fought over lesser debates, from a project standpoint (programming, control loops, pumps) I would think it would be easier to implement and control. Just my tuppence.

    Simplest/First RIMS

Ahhh. That's good to hear. I too was a former 2-banjo burner brewer w/ picnic cooler and have been slowly converting to electric. I made my RIMS tube from pieces and parts mainly from http://stores.ebay.com/Mainland-Valve-and-Fitting-Inc which were really good to work with. Here's my...

Question #1: Is conversion to electric in the cards?

    Fully Automated Brewery Senior Design

The OP is being very, very self deferential. Purdue University is one of the countries top tier engineering schools. There will be no shortage of expertise there. Not to mention Blichmann Engineering is a ten minutes away across the Wabash River (maybe they could help out with some bling!) A...

    Fully Automated Brewery Senior Design

Purdue -- Huh. I'll give you a break as long as you didn't go to Depauw! Caveat Lector: any ideas that you garner here could be construed as "prior art" in any patent challenge. Third party app upon which you'll need to depend. A simple http server is trivial to implement, will be under your...

    Enclosure Grounding Posts

You should check to ensure there aren't nylon bushings in the hinges that could affect path to earth. What brand of enclosure is it? Eric

    Indianapolis Tap Water help

Where are you in Broad Ripple? I've here there are two sources for water around here (I'm near 56th & College) White River pumping station and White River North in addition to the reservoirs. Martin, can you shed more light on this? Water report from January 2013 (not 2012 as it says)

    Effect of Mash Thickness ?

I've recently switched to no sparge and while you lose a bit in terms of efficiency, it does streamline the brewday. The spreadsheet I use to increase the grain bill advocates two water additions but the Braukaiser site seems to negate that. I have a picnic cooler MLT and add all of the water...

    Clogging plate chiller question

+1. I too have a DD plate chiller. If I'm brewing a low IBU beer I'll use 3" stainless tea balls -- I don't care for them for anything over .5oz of plugs. Otherwise I use paint strainer bags. After my initial clogging charlie foxtrot I've never had a problem.

    How Clean is Your ChillPlate?

    >> If you can't taste it or see it, is it really a problem? +1!! I have the B3-23A 30 from dudadiesel. After my brew day I give it a backflush/"forward" flush with hot PBW then a standard starsan rinse. On brewday I circulate w/ boiling wort for the last 15 mins of the boil. Never had an...

What would you do with 100 amps?

In terms of safety I actually prefer propane -- you can smell the gas and see the flame. Electric has neither of those built-in safety features and I believe actually warrants more attention to making it safe. Then again there's the whole CO issue with burners! I'm at risk of hijacking my own...

What would you do with 100 amps?

@Bobby_M said: Although I don't always mashout you're point is still valid -- two elements in BK simply not needed. @ChuckO said: That will be amongst the best days of my life! Personally Im comfortable with automating flipping on an electric element but much less so (read: zero) with...

What would you do with 100 amps?

My primary goal is to reduce the amount of time I spend waiting for water to heat up. I normally do 5 gallon batches but on occasion ten. Heating strike water for a ten gallon batch outside using propane can take a long damn time. Using the calc here...
