Spike Conical- observations and best practices

i'm gun-shy of that fermenter tipping over so i have it strapped to a wall (i have a glycol setup). near my sink, but not right at it. when time to clean, i open the bottom valve and dump as much as i can. then i do a once-through pass of clean, cold water through the cip ball (hot would be...

What I did for beer today

deep cleaned the boil kettle for the first time in, what, a year and a half? it was very stained, assumed it was unsalvagable. hour and a half of circulating 160 degree pbw and damn if that thing doesn't look brand new.

Need a sanity check on service wiring

assuming a 5500 watt element, you'll draw about 23 amps at 240 volt. throw on the pumps and you are around 25 amps. my example of 31 amps above would be if there was some type of flaw with the element and it drew more amps than normal. with a 50 amp upstream breaker, you could be drawing more...

Need a sanity check on service wiring

how 'difficult' will it be to install the wall receptacle? electrician has a point, a 50 amp setup allows the receptacle to be used for a welder, car charger, etc., more flexibility than a 30 amp. if you have to do a bunch of drywall work, painting, etc. to install the recep, might be...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

i didn't initially purchase the racking arm, figured i could dump enough and run the first bit of finished beer to clear the valve. i kept having issues with clogging and finally got the racking arm, no issues since, i don't use a hop bag.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

i've had this happen a bunch of times, a 'gap' of clear wort in the sight glass. this only lasts for a day or so before fermentation really gets rocking and loosens everything up.

current is alternating anyway, you tell me what is pushed/pulled ;)

2250watt element tripping 20 amp breaker

its always kind of irked me when cable manufacturers publish ampacity charts on their websites, at least those that don't provide any additional disclaimer notes. an allowable ampacity chart is only valid for a specific set of installation and use characteristics, which many times the lay...

2250watt element tripping 20 amp breaker

how much current a given copper conductor/cable can adequately carry is a function of the type of insulation and ambient temperature. the copper itself could be glowing hot but as long as the temp does not exceed the insulation temp rating, it will practically be fine (this is pretty funky...

2250watt element tripping 20 amp breaker

i wouldn't sweat the cable, unless it is visibly damaged or something like that. modern (mid-1980s and later) nm (technically nm-b) cable is constructed to operate at up to 90 degree C so pushing 30 amps through a #12 is not an issue. that being said, nec rules limit the allowable ampacity to...

    backyard sauna build

i use mine around 185-190f in the winter, more like 175-180f in the summer. taking breaks/cool-offs are part of the sauna experience. i like 15 minutes in, 15 minutes out. if it is wonky cold in winter, i might only do 10 minutes out. if you only pop out for, say, 5 minutes and then jump...

    backyard sauna build

the tylo heater has three vertical 'chambers', with the middle one filled with stones and the two outer ones as 'open'. idea is that the heat from the exposed elements in the open chambers send all their energy into the air, rather than first heating cold stones. thought is that it will heat...

    Rite brew...

old thread revival but my lhbs decided to stop carrying liquid yeast so i turned to these guys. they are about an hour and fifteen minute drive from me so i selected the pickup option in lieu of shipping. they offer a yeast 'pre-order' option to get the freshest yeast and i got mine in just...

What came in the mail for you today?

racking arm for my conical. i've done several batches without one and just filling kegs from the racking port but i keep getting too much 'stuff' in the kegs. there must be stuff settling in the port as well as running down the wall, hopefully the arm will help.
