Spike Conical- observations and best practices

not a problem for me, one of the reasons i ended up getting the racking arm. before, i would dump the beer clear and fill righ from the racking port, would often see the occasional slug of 'stuff' in the fill line between the conical and the keg, wondered what the heck was going on. issue...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

when kegging my last brew, i was amazed how much stuff slid down into the sight glass as the liquid level in the conical dropped, way more than i had seen in previous batches. i had dumped more than i planned the day prior and the sight glass was clear when i started kegging. by the time the...

i keep mine in the down position all the time. i do a dump before cold crash and another a day into cold crash. the sight glass makes it easy to see when it is running clear, get the most clear beer out of the fementer. if i really want to get the most and i have a non-dry hopped beer, i'll...

i don't have a sight glass on my conical but if i did, i would probably break it down after each use. i'm just not as worried about sanitary issues on the butterfly valve, seems there would need to be a seal failure or something like that to cause some type of harborage. i submerge in pbw...

with everything being tc, not very much time at all to take it apart and give everything a soak. also considering how many fewer fittings there are on a homebrew conical compared to a pro fermenter, especially the big ones, there just isn't as much 'stuff' to touch.

i also disassemble between each use, pbw soak, rinse and set aside to dry until next use. during boil, soak parts in starsan, spray down the interior/lid and re-assemble. i do use a cip ball for cleaning but that is mainly due to the configuration of my brew area, i can't have the conical...

What I did for beer today

brew day tomorrow so today i've already put the yeast starter in the fridge to settle, replaced the di resin in my water system and cleaned some new tc gaskets/fittings. later on is filling the hlt, weighing/milling grain, weighing out brew salts and preheating the hlt to jump start tomorrow's...

snagged a new heater pad today, ordered that mofo yesterday morning, showed up 10 am, standard shipping! granted, i am in wisconsin but damn, that was fast. new pad is waaaay beefier than the old one. plugged it in and hey, it puts out heat but even better, i don't get shocked like the old...

What came in the mail for you today?

new heater for my spike conical. way thicker and beefier than my old one. i think i had one of the first running heaters from spike and not even close comparing them, old one seems wimpy. threw in some spare tc gaskets/clamps to get the price high enough to qualify for free shipping!

concern is with krausen getting into the prv and compromising its safe operation. if sealing up at 7 points left, krausen should have already died down so the chance of it getting into the manifold seems minuscule. i personally use a tc barb with blowoff tube at the start of fermentation and...

getting clear beer: the racking arm made a huge difference for me. my usual mo is to do a single dump before i cold crash, with a 2" tc to barb fitting on the dump valve. dump nice and slow, until it looks clear at the top of the sight glass, then crash. dumping after crash runs the risk of...

    15A receptacle on a 20A breaker?

^this. you don't see them that often but a 20A circuit with only one of the below would be a code violation: a duplex receptacle would be fine: if you had a single receptacle on a 20A circuit, it would need to be rated 20A (note the t-shaped blade configuration):
