wait, what are we talking about here? completely removing/sanitizing a valve or sample port on a conical full of beer? maybe i missed something...

    Wire Gauge Question

no doubt nec doesn't apply inside the panel, i was just pointing out that the the nec (and the more applicable ul 508a) specifically allow for 'undersized' conductors if they meet a certain criteria. this does seem to fly in the face of the commonly accepted 'never size a wire smaller than the...

i'm doing it more to just get the wort out of the fitting, so it does dry out and gum something up. sanitizer is handy, might as well use it...

    Wire Gauge Question

if we're talking national electrical code, there are provisions which allow for conductors to be protected by upstream overcurrent protective devices with ratings greater than the maximum permissible ampacity of the conductor. they are formally defined as 'tap conductors' and have various...

my setup from top down is conical, sight glass, butterfly valve. i have the extension legs and after a dump, place a bucket under the valve, point the starsan spray bottle up and blast the closed valve surface. i angle it a few different directions to get it from all sides, no problems so far...

i do the same but skip the third dump. first dump gets most of the stuff that has already fallen out of suspension. second dump allows for much of the suspended material to fall out due to the cold temps. then i leave it. my thoughts are that each dump kicks material up so takes that much...

i've never been a big warranty guy. like themadking says, actions speak louder than words. i've only had a couple issues with spike but each time, they made it right. send me the wrong size false bottom, sent me a shipping label and also a t-shirt. my kettles have sight glasses and the...

    Mash tun PID? Needed?

so i just did a factory reset on the pid, entered applicable parameters and fired up a 7 gal water batch. thing works like a charm. i was having a separate problem with the temp no longer reading correctly on that pid but since i was just running duty cycle, didn't care that much. factory...

    Mash tun PID? Needed?

^this! was brewing this weekend, started the boil process at 100% output and while i was cleaning out the mash tun, heard some 'cycling' sounds from the kettle. took a look at the pid display and output was jumping all over the place, certainly not 100% output. opened the panel up and didn't...

    Electrical component order

when an ssr fails, it invariably fails in the 'on' position, contactor provides that means of easy isolation. without it, you could fire up your panel and have an element with a failed ssr cause problems.

i crash down to 31 on most my beers. cf10 with the spike neoprene jacket and penguin 1/3 hp glycol chiller. conical is in the unfinished part of my basement, low 60s for most of the year (little warmer in summer, cooler in winter). i have found that wrapping it with a quilt helps immensely.

    Leaving your e-brew setup assembled?

i'm on threaded connections, 50+ brews on the system, have yet to rip the whole thing apart (fittings that is, hoses come off every time). i'll do a 160 degree pbw clean of the boil kettle every 10 brews or so, mlt maybe every 20 brews. cleaning on brew day is a scrub with a sponge and a hot...

    Brewing Salts in Herms HLT

i also do full ro, add all mash salts to the mash only, sparge with straight ro. i could add it all to the hlt but it isn't necessary and my thoughts are that it keeps the hlt 'cleaner' by not dumping salts into the kettle.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

cold-crashing my latest batch, i wrap the whole thing in a blanket for insulation. come back the next day and get a blast of beer smell in the brew room, blanket is pretty wet and there is a small puddle of beer in front of the conical. pull the blanket away and notice a small leak from the...

no white film here either. my routine: remove bottom butterfly valve, attach two 90 degree 2" elbows in its place, vertical orientation this is so i can set a 5 gal bucket on floor in front of bracing shelf, elbows empty into bucket (i have the leg extensions) have to take the butterfly...
