    Brewing Frequency

About 6 times a year for me. Too many other guilty pleasures (bourbon, wine, gin, commercial craft beer) to justify brewing more frequently.

    Bottling: Purging Headspace/Bottles/Bucket

I've tried to push the gas into the beer by putting the Private Preserve's straw under the surface and then 'capping on foam' but I wasn't able to do it without creating a small explosion of beer all over my kitchen; it was a mess so I gave up trying. Now, I put the straw under the cap, push a...

Raw form … I just drop it through a sanitized funnel. Works great!

    Bottling: Purging Headspace/Bottles/Bucket

I use a variety of methods that I picked up from different threads here at HBT. Each has contributed to the end result, which is a marked improvement over my old process. I dose each 12 oz. bottle with 1/2 tsp of table sugar and skip the bottling bucket; fill straight from the fermenter...

    Infection?

Welcome to HBT. Lots of good info to be found here. Not sure what I'm seeing in pic 1 but pic 2 looks good so you should be good to go. Cheers.

Making the best, West Coast IPA

Yes, fair point on a 2 degree difference. But I do think there is a difference between "150 or less" and "154 and above". Cheers.

Making the best, West Coast IPA

Good replies above, and I’ll add that if you’re looking for a crisp, dry finish, consider mashing on the cool side, say 150F or maybe even less. I prefer to mash at 152F but I don’t think you’d want it to go up into the 154 and above range.

Sharing Nostalgia with the Beginners: What Was The First Beer Your Brewed?

Good thread. In 2001 or 2002, my older brother acquired a fermenter, bottling bucket, capper and a bunch of empty returnables and said, "hey, do you want to try to brew some beer?" ... I said, "sure." I'm pretty sure it was a Brewer's Best kit - Amber Ale I think. I don't recall it being...

    BIAB with tap water

Summary: distilled/RO water + adjustments. All. Day. Long. Be mindful of your pH and adjust to taste ... ... ... unless you'd rather not, which is fine. As for the more controversial issue: There is no audible difference between a maple fingerboard and a rosewood fingerboard. Play what...

What I did for beer today

Yesterday I took the day off so I decided to whip up a starter for the mason jar of wlp090 San Diego Super Yeast that had been in the fridge since early April. I wanted to wake it up so I could use it again this winter. It was from an overbuilt starter, so I thought I'd be alright despite the...
