8 oz of wheat??? That seems strange, what do you mean by this?

    Newb methanol question.

Methanol is present in beer, to a very small degree. When you distill the "beer" in making whiskey, you are concentrating the alcohols and removing a large fraction of water. http://www.uvm.edu/~dmatthew/Beer-Green_Mt_ACS.pdf - Methanol is addressed starting on Slide 12 Plus, methanol is not...

    Should I stop active fermentation

Fermentation will be done when it's done, why would you want to stop it before it is complete? I agree that this sounds like an interesting fermentation, but I would still let it complete on it's own schedule. Beer will be done when the microbes are finished fermenting, not when the software...

First batch of cider (new to the world off brewing

So, despite all of the advice to let it sit, you chose to dump it??? Things can taste terrible/look during active fermentation. Never make a final judgement while fermentation is ongoing, and from your photos and descriptions (cloudy)... fermentation was ongoing.

Why did my airlock go back to bubbling

Airlock activity should not be used as the sole indicator of fermentation activity. It is a qualitative "eyeball" check only. I have a few fermentation buckets that do not have a complete seal and do not provide much airlock activity at all (only during the height of fermentation). Level of...

Getting the most out of a gift card?

Sell them on eBay. You can get 85% for them, there. Just have to account for shipping and eBay fees when you set your price to ensure you get the percent return you'd like.

First batch of cider (new to the world off brewing

Compared to beer, cider typically requires more patience. It's a simple process... juice from apples (often called "the must"), yeast, and (maybe) some nutrients for the yeast. Then, it requires time. For my process, the usually involves one month in the primary fermenter, followed by another...

Why did my airlock go back to bubbling

Temperature change? An increase in temperature will cause the gas inside the fermenter to expand and displace the volume in the airlock. Plus, as it warms, CO2 will come out of solution and further displace water in the airlock.

    Stainless steel bottle filler...

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/threads/bottle-fillers.669321/#post-8662390 You lose about 0.4 oz in a 12-oz bottle using the SS wand vs. plastic wand. I switched back to plastic because of that. You can disassemble the plastic ones for disinfection, too.

4 packs of 16 ounce versus 6 packs of 12 ounce

I think the trend towards 16 oz cans is driven by two things: 1) Less expensive packaging for the brewery, and 2) the idea that the consumer gets a full pint in the can. If I have the 16 oz cans, I never drink directly from the can. I'll pour it into a glass. And, there's nothing quite so...

    Another stalled fermentation question

Don't use a refractometer for gravity measurements once fermentation is underway. The presence of alcohol causes artificially high readings. The refractometer assumes you have water and sugar as the sole actors on the refractive index of the solution. The alcohol throws off the refractive...

    Help! Vinegary taste AGAIN

Is no one concerned that the wort was not heated to pasteurization temperatures, let alone boiled to sanitize? To me, that is a concern. Which chemicals, specifically, did you use to clean and sanitize? This Krausen Kollar, seems to be an extraneous piece of equipment that is really not...

Pitted BIAB Boil Kettle- worth salvage?

No, the oxide layer remains. My pot never looks brighter after the boil. It usually takes a very aggressive solvent to dissolve alumina. For instance, I have used HF to dissolve alumina in a lab setting.

Pitted BIAB Boil Kettle- worth salvage?

However, with the aluminum, you do want a good layer of oxide built up before using. IT is recommended that once you clean your aluminum pot, fill it with water and boil it. That will create a darker gray layer of oxide that will help protect the kettle before boiling wort in it. Some people...

Overcoming Potassium Sorbate in Zeigler's Apple Cider

FYI - Simply Apple is pasteurized... they state it is "gently pasteurized". FDA requires a warning label on any unpasteurized juice product, and Simply Apple does not have this warning.
