    Couple of questions

    1) I've got 5 or 6 brews under my belt now (just using the kits) and on all of them I have used a bucket for the primary. I have a 6.5 gallon glass carboy that I would like to try for the primary (just to watch some of the action) but I'm still unsure how to rig up a blow-off tube. What size and...

    Glass carboy as primary question

OK. Thanks. Watching the action for the first time is kind of what I had in mind as well as wanting to brew another one.

    Glass carboy as primary question

I'm still a newbie with 4 or 5 brews under my belt but still coming up with additional questions. I've got the brewing fever right now and ready to do another one. I've got 2 in primary buckets right now and don't want to disturb them. I've never used the carboy as the primary and just wanted to...

Question on brewing with fruit flavors

I've brewed four batches now but still am uncomfortable in moving away from the brew kits but my question is this. With spring fast approaching I was wondering if I could brew anything close to the Abita Strawberry. I've read a few threads on here which discuss adding the fruit to the secondary...

What are some of the mistakes you made...where your beer still turned out great!

Great thread. Is there anyway to pin it. Wish I had known this thread existed 3 months ago after I brewed my first batch.

    Fourth Brew

Thanks for the reply. The carboy is 5 g. Am I going to have problems if I can't get the wort cooled down any faster? I will have a bag of ice handy next time hoping that will help.

    Fourth Brew

Tried something different last night on my fourth one. Been wanting to try a full boil. I had a 7.5 g turkey pot (never been used). I started out with 4 g water in the pot for steeping while boiling 1.5 g water in another pot. After steeping I added the other ingredients, stirred them in, then...

Just as I was feeling good about things

I put all of the remaining bottles in the fridge approximately 9 hours ago. So far none of the others have exploded. Even opened two tonight. They opened with no problem and tasted pretty good.

Just as I was feeling good about things

I think from now on I'm going to use an idea I saw in another thread. I'm buying a large rubbermade type container to store my newly bottled beer in. This board is full of great ideas. Reading the various threads on here is almost as addictive as the brewing itself.

Just as I was feeling good about things

4 weeks. By the way the beer was in a covered box so not too big of a mess so far unless my fridge is a mess when I get home. Should I have gotten rid of all of it or is it worth trying to salvage. I opened one and it tasted pretty good.

Just as I was feeling good about things

This is embarrassing but since it is a board for beginners maybe it will help someone else keep from making the same mistake. My first brew a couple of months ago was Autumn Amber. Everything went perfect including a great tasting beer. So I immediately brewed another one (cream stout) again...

    Am I OK

I live in Newton. Thanks for the quick replies. On second thought I don't think I'll try the full boil this weekend. Sounds like I need a larger pot for starters. Oh well I'll stick with the partial boils on a few more kits and then try to step it up a little.

    Am I OK

I've got three partial boils under my belt and thought I would try a full boil this weekend with a 7.5 gallon turkey pot (just happened to have one never used). Is there anything tricky about it other than I was thinking maybe a little more difficult cooling the wort down. Thanks

    Two Unrelated Questions

1.) I just brewed a kit called High Octane IPA. A small package of oak chips came with the kit. After reading many threads on this board my plan is to leave it in the primary for 4 weeks before bottling. Do I really need to add those chips and if so at what point should I add them. 2) The...

    I've got a problem-Help!

Scared my Dr will tell me to quit drinking beer. LOL. When I posted the question I was just wondering if any others experienced the same problems and hoping there were some other preventitives I didn't know about.

    I've got a problem-Help!

I've only been into the craft beer scene for a year or so and love it. I've also just gotten into home brewing and love it too. I've got my third batch in the primary now. But here is my problem. I'm 57 yrs old and never experienced gout until about two years ago but has gotten worse recently...

    Question on beer kits

I joined this site a couple months ago and got some very good advice when I was brewing my first batch which was Autumn Amber Ale (I was surprised how good it turned out by the way). My second batch was a cream stout which I bottled this past weekend (Haven't tasted it yet). I also brewed one...
