    Keggle

I've even seen some use a Dremel. But there's no way in the world I'd try that.

    5 vs 10 gallon cooler

Or you could go with the 5 gallon like I did. Then when I did my first AG my target mash temp was low, but since I went 5 gallon I had no room to add water to bring up my temp. It sucked. I went directly to Walmart after the brew session and bought a 48 qt.

    Yeast can be a PITA

Right on, sorry about that then! :rockin:

cooler mash temp idea for poor folk like me

I upgraded my MLT to a 48qt Rubbermaid regtangular cooler (Walmart for like 15 dollars) but when I tested it I lost several degrees during the hour after letting it preheat. So since I had made the manifold and valve and such I wasn't taking this one back. Instead I purchased a $8 sleeping bag...

    Yeast can be a PITA

I'm really not sure if this pertains to the problem at all, and I must admit that I always keep Nottingham yeast on hand as a back-up without actually using it; but, I do remember reading someone (maybe Palmer?) say you shouldn't use Nottingham in a starter, but only rehydrate and pitch. If I...

How long should I ferment? (OG 1.061)

Everyone has their own method, but I'd say the hydrometer is the best (maybe only) true way to check your fermentation. I personally haven't made a beer that high in alcohol content yet, and I do fine with the 1-2-3 method that many use on HBT. That is 1 week in primary, 2 in secondary, and 3 in...

Tried hard to ruin my first brew

You're not necessarily screwed, but the chances of contamination are much higher. I just recently purchased an autosiphon (see the pic above for an example) and they work magically. Otherwise using the gravity method is pretty easy. But yeah, you should never use your mouth as it introduces the...

    Question on yeast

+1 on making a starter. I often have difficulty getting smack packs smacked (wow...say that five times as fast as you can!). On my last batch I had a smack pack that barely swelled, so I decided to do a starter in case it was bad. Well, when I went to pitch into the starter, I found that I...

    Decoction Mash Video

Fantastic video! Please pardon my naivete, as this is the first time I've actually seen this done; but, I kept wondering during the video if boiling the decoction would extract the tannins from the malt husks? I know that I must be wrong to think this. So how does that work?

    Caramel Porter

Why not just add a good amount of Caramel/Crystal Malt? If you check the Recipes/Ingredients posts, there's a sticky entitled "Ingredients Guides" with websites that have some fantastic descriptions of the different crystal/caramel malts and the tastes they add. In fact, I like to taste the malt...

+1 on this method. I use it without any problems either!

Ever notice ones you go all grain, it consumes you?

Last night, I was making some green beans on the stove. I walked away from the stove for a second and it started boiling over. My first thought was, "OH SHOOT, HOW DID I FORGET ABOUT THE HOT BREAK?!" enough said

    Star San?

My StarSan solution is cloudy from the get go. I have brewclub friends who have been brewing for 20 years and their advice was to make a batch of solution and reuse ad nauseum (atleast 3-4 months). If it runs low add more solution. If the bottom of your tub (whatever you make your solution in)...

How does this work with Grolsch bottles? Can you still put them in the oven with the rubber part?

    Explosive Cyser

Wow! Thats unbelievable! I haven't made a cyser before, but have made mead and Apfelwein and never had any blowoff at all. Good news is you're definitely making some alcohol!

    Frustrated with high fermentation temps.

I recently had the same exact problem when the temp outside started getting higher and the heat was still on (I live in university married housing, unfortunately we don't control heating at all). So I grabbed a big plastic storage container, put my carboy in, and put about two to three inches of...

    I hate HomeDepot!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being a former worker at Lowe's, I'll chime in on the phone number thing. At least at Lowe's, they don't sell the phone number. The reason they ask is so, if you later return a product without the receipt, the register prompts the cashier for a phone number which Lowe's keeps in the database. So...
