Options to avoid a dry hop - increase whirlpool/flameout hops?

I'm not sure that fermenting under pressure from the beginning of the fermentation will achieve your goal of going grain to glass in a shorter period of time. Yeast typically ferment a little slower under pressure; however, because ester production is suppressed, you can compensate by increasing...

Options to avoid a dry hop - increase whirlpool/flameout hops?

I guess I'll provide an alternative view. In my experience, no method of hopping in the kettle, or even an hopback, is a substitute for dry hopping. If all the hops are added in the kettle then the fermentation starts with all of the hop yumminess that would ever be in there. The off gassing...

    Is this corny keg salvageable?

I have had that at the bottom of the keg and I also cannot reach the bottom of the keg. Some BKF sprinkled at the bottom, a scotch brite pad, long spoon to move the scrubbie pad, and some elbow grease fixed it.

    torpedo floating dip tube

Honestly, I'm not sure. I use these, but always with a 1-2 inch long ss mesh filter on the intake. This seems enough weight to keep the intake submerged. Hard to know if a worm clamp will be heavy enough.

The intake on these things have a tendency to angle up and suck from the headspace a bit. Many people solve this by weighing down the intake with a stainless steel nut or something.

Ferment+serve in a corny keg vs using fermenter and transferring

I dry hop exactly the same way. Seems to work pretty well.. ..to the point where I feel that hop quality is the biggest factor in getting good flavour and aroma. Strangely, the mesh at the end of the dip tube doesn't seem to clog under normal operation. It has when the floaty-ball came off, but...

Ferment+serve in a corny keg vs using fermenter and transferring

I also tried that method.. ..and also found it to be a disaster. I use the Torpedo keg-style floating dip tubes but put a ~1-2 inch cone of stainless steel mesh over the intake of the floating dip tube. Works well to keep the tube submerged and to filter out hops. I actually cut up the keg dry...

Ferment+serve in a corny keg vs using fermenter and transferring

I think you know my opinion on this, so its a bit repetitive to give it. However, for the consideration of others who might read this thread I'll reiterate it. I have been fermenting exclusively in kegs for several years now (my SSBrewbucket with FTS system is collecting dust). I dry hop ~80% of...

What equipment should I get, dazed and confused.

If you are getting kitted-out with kegs from the start it might be worth pointing you to this thread on fermenting and serving from the same keg. I have done it many times with good success, as have many in that thread. Best success is by modding the keg with a floating dip tube. Importantly, I...

Single Vessel Brewing System Temperature Stability

This is an interesting thread. I have a question for anyone who can answer it. So, the flow of the recirculation is split and some portion is returned to the top of the mash. For the remaining portion, does it matter how high up in the outer vessel (the kettle) the remaining portions is returned?

    Lost Grainfather top perforated plate…

Yeah, long story about why I got rid of the overflow, but it works well for me. Yes, I still recirculate. The wort is delivered through a floating mashcap. In your case I would just find a way to suspend the end of the return tube and disperse the flow a bit. I have actually used a makeshift...

    Lost Grainfather top perforated plate…

I haven't used it for years. Also ditched the overflow pipe too (plugged the hole in the bottom plate). I think you'll be fine.

First stuck mash on Grainfather: what did I do wrong?

Here is an easy guide: Benefits of Wet Milling and Grain Conditioning | MoreBeer. Basically its just spritzing your grain with 60-90 ml of water before milling. It makes the husks more pliable so you can close your mill gap a bit and still not shred the husks. I also mill straight into my malt...

Floating Dip Tube - Which One?

There are now a million and one of these things... .. anything with the floaty-ball works great. Like this: Torpedo Keg Buoy ™ Floating Dip Tube | MoreBeer. There are lots of versions. All can be customized to cover the intake tube with a bit of mesh to filter out hops.

First stuck mash on Grainfather: what did I do wrong?

I've been using a Grainfather for ~6 years (many brews) and found early on it was prone to poor flow rates through the mash and, at worst, stuck mashes. I started conditioning my grain prior to milling and all these problems were solved, and my efficiency went up :)

Fermenting and serving from a keg

Which spunding valve? I use some DIY ones. They work great but took a lot of tweaking to get there. If I were to buy some now I would go with those preassembled Blow-Tie valves. Two friends of mine bought them and really like them.

No worries. Just wanted to make sure we were on the same page.

Fermenting and serving from a keg

Not sure what you mean by the spunding valve not supporting your no O2 plan? Late in the fermentation the headspace of the keg is fully purged with CO2, but under only minimal pressure. When you put the spunding valve on you just trap any remaining CO2 to carbonate in a completely O2 free...

Fermenting and serving from a keg

As with most things related to homebrew process, you'll never find out if it works for you until you try it. There is a whole thread on fermenting and serving from kegs and many people swear by it, so I don't think you run much risk trying it. I go straight from my kettle (Grainfather) into the...
