    DIY Conical Fermenter?

I bought two ten gallon tanks from these people and converted them for 7.5 gallon batches. I drilled a racking port just above where the trub settles. Works great. One thing that I did do that was a little different was to take the lid flange and flip it up so that it was on the outside of the...

    Mini brew conical=4 bad batchs

I have been using these conicals (2) for years. I did have a couple of bad batches several years ago but I think it came from the yeast. My cleaning / sanitizing methods for cleaning my conicals are as follows: Drain the conicals into my Kegs. I have a sink and and place it in the it a...

Liquid Ball Lock Connector For Carbonating

I have a dedicated CO2 tank and regulator for set it and forget it carbonating of my kegs. I have always used the gas connector to the liquid out post and turned the regulator to 12 - 14 psi for 7 - 10 days. The question I have is can I use the liquid out connectors to do this? The gas...

Using 2 simmerstats to control 4500W/5500W element

Saw the post today. I guess I have a couple of questions. How big a kettle are you using? My element that I use is 3200w which matches the amperage of the simmerstat. Do you really need 2 elements? I am currently on my fourth generation of this design. I have upgrade from a 7 gallon kettle...

    Brewer's ProTip

    1. Shut the valve on the Conical before pouring the wort. 2. Turn off the water before the kettle is full. 3. Remember the Stir Bar before dumping the starter. 4. Remember to turn off the Oxygen bottle after you are done putting Oxygen in the wort. I am sure that I can come up with more...

    Keg Carbonation Pressure

Thanks Bobby, You have given me another idea. My problem has always been to figure out when it is properly carbed. I will now just shut off the CO2, let the head space settle and then check my gauge for the proper carbonation level. Thanks Everyone for the suggestions. TD

    Keg Carbonation Pressure

I have been struggling and being able to get the proper carbonation when I carbonate my kegs. I have tried the set it and forget it and the force carbonating both with mixed results. The last two kegs I have seemed to have the proper carbonation with minimal foam. My question to the forum...

Technique to Dumping Yeast out of Conical Bottom?

Just a couple of notes on your yeast dumping. I think you are on the right course by making the racking tube inside at the 1.0 gallon level instead having it down towards the bottom. I would definately get rid of the Pet tubing. Another thought which is what I do, you might try is to dump...

    Phil Mill

I do and it works great. Been using it for 3 years now. I have modified it and now hook a drill up to it to avoid the crank. TD

    Electric Kettle Instructions

Just thought I would bump this to the head of the list because of all the interest in building a Electric Kettle. TD

    vanilla question

Yes, Vanilla Extract is 40% alcohol. I have used it many times and have found the best time to add it to your beer is right before bottling/kegging. When I have put it in before fermenting it tends to drop to the bottom and not get mixed in. I use 5 tablespoons per 5 gallons. TD

    plastic vs steel conical fermenter

Yes you could do both without much problem. You could siphon from the top. You could bottle from the bottom after all the trub and yeast had been dumped. TD

    plastic vs steel conical fermenter

As someone who has two ten gallon plastic fermenters from Tank Depot and has posted several times on the building of the fermenter I guess ignorance is bliss. When I bought my fermenters my intention was to always have a racking port. I simply measured up from the bottom where the one gallon...

    plastic vs steel conical fermenter

Bingo award. This is what I do. I just dump in from the top and then Oxygenate through the top. TD

    plastic vs steel conical fermenter

For the dump valve at the bottomtank I have a 1 1/2 FPT threads already in the tank. I bought a Nylon Reducer Bushing 1/1/4 to 3/4 and then put a 3/4 - 3/4 Nylon Close Nipple in the 3/4 inch reducer bushing. I then attached a brass 3/4 inch ball valve to the nipple. Thus my dump valve. As...

    plastic vs steel conical fermenter

I have just finished my second 10 gallon fermenter from the Tank Depot and currently have a 7.5 gallon batch actively bubbling away. Before I was using (2) 6.5 gallon plastic fermenters from MiniBrew for the last 4 years and never had a problem. Last spring I decided to go with a 10 gallon...

At what point did your homebrew go from good to great?

For me it was when I found this web site and began reading it daily. Reading all the different ideas that my fellow brewer has allowed me to progress from Extract to Extract with Specialty Grains to Partial Mashing to All-Grain. I have learned as to who I can trust when ordering supplies over...
