First Partial Mash: Follow The Directions, or our Sticky?

So, for purely aesthetic reasons (And due to the lack of a second bigass pot), I went with the morebeer directions, and used my bottling bucket with a mesh bag as a lauter tun. Everything went pretty well for a first shot at a partial mash, I think. The sweet wort came out at 1.034 (is that...

How to dry bottles without a bottle rack?

Whenever I whip up a batch of sanitizer at the beginning of a bottling day, I put some in a spray bottle, then hose down everything that's too big to fit in the bucket.

First Partial Mash: Follow The Directions, or our Sticky?

Hi Folks! Upon reading DeathBrewer's awesome sticky, I decided that my third batch ever would be a partial mash kit from morebeer.com. I received their Irish Stout kit in the mail yesterday, and I'll be brewing on Saturday. Now, morebeer has some instructions online that differ from...

How to dry bottles without a bottle rack?

I use a vinator with a strong iodophor solution to hose down the insides of the bottles: Then stick 'em on the (sanitized) rack of the dishwasher: Easy-peasy!

    Better than a bottle tree?

[edit!] Totally in the wrong thread. Sorry!

    siphoning

If you're looking to work on the cheap, you can use a turkey baster to fill up your tubing with sanitizer to start the siphon off. I dunk my hose/racking cane ends in my bucket o' sanitizer, then use the baster to blast all the air bubbles out. Then, I reach in, stick my thumb on the hose...

Best way to fix a mistake I made with my hops?

I'd definitely avoid pouring. You want as little exposure to the air as possible. Either siphon it outta the primary bucket with a racking cane and a hose, or use that tap and a hose. Best way for me (so far) is to boil up the sugar in some water (gotta sanitize!), let it cool, then put it...

Primary Fertmenter doubles as Bottling Bucket?

The advice I've been sticking with for two-staging with is a simple 1-2-3. 1 Week in primary (minimum), 2 weeks in secondary (minimum), 3 weeks conditioning in the bottle (minimum). You'll have plenty of time to clean out the primary bucket over those two weeks before you need to reuse it as...

    Bottled my first mead!

Malkore: No kidding. Everything I heard about Ancient Orange was "decent fast, doesn't really age". Good to know. Laura: Thanks! I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I'm amazed that such a goofy-simple recipe came out so well. As for the blog, it really wasn't too much of a stretch...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2010?

Ha ha. I thought it was all about personal totals (lifetime + 2010). Here I was, thinking "Wow. These guys have brewed tens of thousands of gallons! Amazing!". My bad. I'll try to read a bit more thoroughly next time :)

How many gallons of homebrew in 2010?

Brewed 5 gallons each of my local store's Nut Brown Ale (delish!) and their British Pale ale (conditioning now), and 2 gallons of Joe's Ancient Orange Mead. That makes 12 gallons, which brings the grand total to 12 gallons, as 1/3/10 is the date I popped my brewer cherry :)

    Bottled my first mead!

Bottled a 2-gallon batch of Ancient Orange mead yesterday. It already tastes good. Very tart, since I used some very berry-tasting blood oranges, so it's not super-sweet like some meads can be (in my experience). Here's my motley assortment of bottles. The middle one is clear glass, so...

    Is my ABV value correct?

Yeah, well, I guess they want to keep their kits unique. If ya bug 'em for info, they'll give you the AAU breakdowns and stuff. It's not a huge deal for my first few batches, so I'm not gonna get upset. However, I do look forward to whipping up some batches based on real recipes so I can...

    Is my ABV value correct?

Wyzazz: Good advice. I wouldn't dream of bottling yet. Irregular Pulse: Thanks for the quick math. You're right. I did about a 3gallon boil, then topped up to 5 gallons. I took the sample from my bottling spigot, which could explain the high number, assuming that the thick stuff was still...

    Is my ABV value correct?

Hey guys, On Sunday, I pitched a batch of a British Pale Ale from a brew store kit. It was a beginner's kit (my second batch ever), so the ingredients were pretty simple. 6.6 lbs Northwestern Gold LME a pack of kettle hops, 60 Min (the hop blend is proprietary to the shop that built the...

    Where Did my beer go?

Hi Folks, I'm working on my first batch ever, a nut brown ale kit from a local shop. Everything seemed to go fine. I pitched, it bubbled, it stopped, and I racked it over to a secondary to clear. That's when things got weird. I estimate that there's only about 3 gallons present of the...
