Dead yeast from an online supplier -- should I ask for my money back?

Personally I think you have to take some individual responsibility as a consumer and realize that if its over 100 degrees outside standard 3-5 day shipping is probably not a good idea for yeast. On the other side of things I've seen retailers in other industries actually require next day...

    Beer for dogs?

As anyone with a lab can probably tell you, beer is far from the worst thing my dogs have ingested. I consider my pups to be an integrated part of the brewing process. They get the wort left in the deadzone in my mashtun (a cup or two at most) as well as a portion of the spent grain for dog...

    Orange Honey Wheat

I've made several honey wheats and in my experience the honey ferments out pretty completely and you don't end up with much "honey" flavor in the end product. For the most part it just adds to ABV which is fine if thats what your going for. Orange blossom honey may leave some residual flavor...

Anyone else not crazy about New Belgium?

It's a fine choice if your faced with restaurant that only stocks BMC and Fat Tire, but otherwise there are better brews for sure. I don't know if they use biscuit malt in everything they brew, it sure tastes like the do. And I can concur with many other posters about it tasting watered...

Red Ale turned out tofee-ey - input?

I had a similar flavor show up in a beer where I used a significant amount of Cara-Red so that may be where it is stemming from.

    SMaSHing Mistake

I'm very familiar with the HBS that you are referring to, and have had similar experiences with them. They told me I was nuts for using rice hulls in a mash where wheat was 50% of the grist. They actually refused to sell the rice hulls to a friend that I had pick up my grain, I had to go back...

    Hops growing in Colorado??

you *could* plant them this year and not do them any harm, but I doubt you would see any cones from starting this late. It would give you a head start for next year though. From my limited experience with growing them it seems that year 1 growth is limited and not too exciting, but...

    Kids and Brewing...

My oldest is only 3, but I let him help with small things like weighing grain and hops and scooping the spent grains from the mash tun. Then while the keggle is on the stove he gets out his homer bucket, fills it with water and mixes in dirt and leaves with a paint stirrer. He tells me that...

    US-05 yeast for a Hefe?

This is my first post on these forums, but I use US-05 for my go to summer wheat beer and it turns out fantastic every time. If your after the banana/clove/bubblegum character of a hefe, you won't get it with this yeast, but it will produce a nice clean crisp beer.
