points per pound of grain? (PM question)

Yes, the points are per pound per gallon, and should be 33 to 37 at 100% efficiency (which then gets divided by your total volume), and at 70% eff you'd get about 23 to 26points per pound, or about 5 points when diluted across a 5 gallon batch.

What grains are in your pantry?

You just need pale ale malt. With it you can make anything from pale ale to old ale, which should get you through the dark days of winter until your taste buds once again spring forth. The real question is what kind of hops do you need to stock? Hrmmm... You just need fuggles. Yes...

    Brewing with tall fescue malt

Let me take a look. It says: ----- Atri-Pro Premium Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue 98.6% tall fescue 0.2% inert matter 1.19% other crop seed (1% ryegrass) 0.01% weed seed 85% germination ----- The 85% germination is a small problem. A maltster won't accept a barley crop at less than...

Once grains have been crushed, how long do they last?

I often wait weeks or months. As long as a grain stays dry (store in low humidity) and cool it can last for a year or so, even when coarse-ground like the grains in the baking section of your grocery store. They go bad only through attack by fungi, insects, and bacteria, all of which require...

    amylase enzyme... A.k.a... beano

I think he meant that adding alpha-amylase would liberate more fermentable sugars from complex non-fermentable sugars and carbohydrates, so in effect it is releasing more sugar into the brew. :)

    amylase enzyme... A.k.a... beano

So it's not your water, your barley, or your yeast. Gotta be the hops! :D Time to try sacrificing a chicken in a voodoo ceremony or perhaps singing incantations to Ninkasi. ;) Have you made any 'improvements' to your procedure over the last three batches?

    amylase enzyme... A.k.a... beano

Is it possible that your water company just swtiched from regular chlorination to using chloramine? The first warning many people get is when all their aquarium fish die. I also once had a problem with high copper levels from a wort chiller I had forgotten about having had for a few years...

    Brewing with tall fescue malt

Well, I just opened one of the bottles (it's only been carbonating for two days) and gave it a taste. Certainly not great, but definitely not bad. I've brewed worse and bought worse. It was too thin (I'd given it a 45 minute protein rest and if anything the malt was over-modified) and a...

    Brewing with tall fescue malt

Well, I bought a 25 pound bag of tall fescue seed from Lowe's, which I believe was called Kentucky 51 and was NOT Pennkoted (some moisture retaining coating that most seed brands apply so you don't have to water your lawn as much). I filled up a 1 quart mason jar with seed (which is about 3/4...

    Brewing with tall fescue malt

I just bottled two all tall fescue beers. Has anyone else tried using fescue instead of barley? So far it looks and smells like real beer. I haven't yet malted, mashed, and brewed a batch big enough to get good numbers on, though. I'm still testing for basic drinkability.
