    CT Brewers Check-In

Hello to one and all. Just checking in - currently an extract & grains brewer in Ridgefield but hopefully cutting over to all grain in the next couple of brews.

Going electric all-grain on the cheap...

Good to know I can do this as most of the recipes I've seen that I want to try seem to be 7-8lb for 5G and as I'll be limited to a 3G boil (for now) this should be simple enouigh to practice with (and making 2.5G at a time I'm going to get to play twice as often :)). The did see a Barleywine...

Going electric all-grain on the cheap...

I've read (maybe Palmer or BYO Wizard) that increased malt concentration can affect the hop utilization - do you know how much extra hop you'd need for a 3G high-OG wort being diluted t0 5G?

Going electric all-grain on the cheap...

Thanks, guys - I think I'm going down this route... cheapass bag in a cheapass cooler and start with 3G boils for 2.5G fermentation. Once I get my act together I might see if I can get the hotrod and move to a slightly larger boil (at least for lower OG beers given Jim's feedback).

Going electric all-grain on the cheap...

I've considered BIAB and may well come back to it. However, I have a 5G Coleman insulated cooler to hand and really fancy trying multistep so for a few bucks I should be able to convert it. If I bomb out I may come back to BIAB. The hotrod... that could be useful. Thanks for the heads-up.

Going electric all-grain on the cheap...

I have checked them out a few times, but way more coin than I've got to hand :(

Going electric all-grain on the cheap...

I keep looking at all the posts about the benefits of all-grain, but I can't boil more than 3.5G and I don't want to boil outside (rules out a burner), I didn't win the powerball (rules out Blingmann tower or off the shelf electric system like the grainfather) and I don't have a 240v outlet free...

Black Friday. How I hate thee....

Yep, I've been mentally trying to design a bare-bones electric BIAB but for the foreseeable I'll be just brewing extract on the stovetop. Still, like you say, as long as the brew is drinkable all is good (especially now that I've found SWMBO has a taste for Belgian ales...)

Black Friday. How I hate thee....

Sorry to hear about the shift to the Social, but sounds like you've got it under control. I've squirrelled a little something aside so may be able to pick up an upright freezer off Craigslist this weekend to morph into a fermentation chamber :-)

Black Friday. How I hate thee....

I get paid every two weeks and so one Friday is 'yay! let's drop some coin on equipment, ingredients, etc.' and the other is 'urgh! can we get to next Friday without hitting an alert'. This Friday is an urgh! Friday... so currently I'm trying to avoid every 'get your hops at the lowest price...

    Pearl Jam's "Yellow Ledbetter"

Hmm - 'Indian Summer' for a wheat, 'Garden of Stone' for an IPA or 'Washed in Black' for a stout - I could start a brewery with this album...:)

What has given me a slight 'liquorice' flavor?

I think I owe that to the world. Ask not what your country can brew for you...

What has given me a slight 'liquorice' flavor?

I kept it toward the lower end of the range (used a cool brew cooler).

How much wort to leave behind?

Just a quick follow up. The brew was bottled a couple of weeks back and on drinking yesterday the family agreed it was a good brew. More germane to this thread - the beer is clear as a bell! :ban: I meant to post a picture but I drank it before I remembered. :D Again, thanks to all for...

    Pearl Jam's "Yellow Ledbetter"

Well, fair play to them as Eddie did kinda have to make this up on the spot (at least according to McCready). Guess he's still trying to work out the final version. Still, I love the whole 'Ten' album - takes me to a very specific time and place. Hmm - lemon yellow sun... sounds like a...

What has given me a slight 'liquorice' flavor?

So could be yeast... Or could be the candi I guess the only thing to do is brew it again and change one. Damn... another brew day. What a hardship. :D

What has given me a slight 'liquorice' flavor?

Yep, Brewers Best. They've done me proud so far - and I've found my wife has quite a taste for Belgian style beers.

What has given me a slight 'liquorice' flavor?

That would make sense - I was hoping that someone out there may have used this particular Candi and could vouch for it being the cause or not.

What has given me a slight 'liquorice' flavor?

Hi there, 2 weeks since bottling and 4 weeks since brew day for an extract Belgian Dark Strong and all is good: Quaffable to me and (most importantly) SWMBO, clear as a bell, deceptively potent - with a definite hint of liquorice. (SWMBO has a better sense of taste and smell and she says...
