Any step-by-step walkthroughs on mash/sparge water calcs?

I'm pretty sure this has been covered somewhere but my jedi search powers are weak tonight... Are there any detailed examples of how you calculate the water volumes for infusion, mash, and batch sparge? I can easily get my head around Palmer's infusion calcs for 1, 2, and 3 step infusions...

Cold crashing, bottle conditioning, and thermal shock to yeast

I took the plunge and set the ferm/fridge to 32F to see. From 70 it dropped to 45 in a day but took another day to get down to 34F - so more a grinding halt than a crash... However, the beer was the clearest I've ever racked - another week and it'll be about ready to taste (though another week...

5 Gallon Brew pot on a radiant heater - need recommendations

I'm after two 5G pots to split boils on a stove top with a radiant hob. I was looking at the 5 Gallon Stainless Steel Brew Pot over at Adventures in Homebrewing when I noticed this little gem in the Description: (My emphasis.) Given most of the pots I'm looking at budget-wise need to be in...

Cold crashing, bottle conditioning, and thermal shock to yeast

Thanks for the reply. it's good to know you've not had any issues with crashing the yeast. Thanks for confirming my thoughts on the wheat beers - I'll leave them be.

Cold crashing, bottle conditioning, and thermal shock to yeast

Sorry - bit of a mouthful that title. I finally cobbled together a ferm chamber from a fridge (currently holding my latest Saison at a pretty solid 70F) and was wondering about cold crashing my beer before bottling. I've read that thermal shocking for yeast occurs going from warm to cold, but...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'm planning a simple Saison - LHBS for the ingredient today, brew tomorrow, ready by Memorial Day for the unofficial start of Summer.

Newbie with a Ward report - is a big bicarb number an issue or not?

Thanks so much for this - I've read (and re-read) a few times, I'm still uncertain about next steps beyond the mash. I'd like to stay away from RO (partly as it's a bugger to find near me - they all seem to prefer pseudo-spring water - which I get out my faucet.) I've requested the test as...

Newbie with a Ward report - is a big bicarb number an issue or not?

I thought I could work this out. I was wrong. :( I have hard, but tasty well water and finally paid for a Ward test as I want to move to All Grain and needed a baseline. The numbers are in and... I'm not sure. When I put these in Bru'n Water the calcium. magnesium and bicarb are higher...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewing a session Witbier tomorrow (OG ~1.050, target ABV ~4.5% so easy to drink) which should be good to go end of April. Just got to decide what to brew for Memorial day...

What is the bare minimum info you need to 'treat' your water?

So far all the beers have come out good enough that I'm not the only person who'll happily drink them. That said, I think I'm going to have to stump up for a test and then wrap my head around the Bru'n Water site and play with a few drops of phosphoric acid or baking soda. Still, I guess this...

What is the bare minimum info you need to 'treat' your water?

I'll need to start looking at what the local store has. I know Target sells 'Market Pantry Purified Water' for just under a buck a gallon but they add some minerals that some people find objectionable (though I should be able to get a water report from customer services)

What is the bare minimum info you need to 'treat' your water?

Do you have the link to the repeat option? I was looking for this on the Ward site but could only find the W5A Brewers Test for $27.25

What is the bare minimum info you need to 'treat' your water?

Being frugal (or 'cheap') I don't want to spend money on a water analysis unless I need to. We're on a well and the water is hard but is wonderful to drink - but as for brewing, that's where it gets interesting as I want to cut from my current extract & grains approach to all grain BIAB. When...
