    Refractometer and hydrometer not agreeing

Yes, it makes sense that in full krausen, yeast and foam and hop debris could pile onto the Pill and affect accuracy. But wouldn't this mainly be a problem only in mid fermentation, meaning full krausen, and not near the start or finish? Since it's the start and finish I care about, a mid...

Thanks for that. My eyesight is fine but maybe I'll try that photograph tip.

    When to dry hop

Yes, the best judge is yourself. I should try splitting a batch and in one, add hops at yeast pitch and in another add them later in full krausen. See if I can tell/prefer one over the other.

    Refractometer and hydrometer not agreeing

FH Steinbert makes a much better hygrometer, I'm sure. But after shipping to Canada, it's actually cheaper to buy a Pill. I see it like bbq thermometers. In the old days I'd check the doneness of a roast from time to time. But the time I poked in the thermometer would be before or after...

    Refractometer and hydrometer not agreeing

I don't think it's "very bad eyesight". Everyone says that, so that means they are just damn hard to read. You shouldn't have to take photos. That's a problem of the tool, not of you. The refractometer is easy to read, but is never accurate out of the box, and needs to be calibrated...

How are You Measuring Fermentation Temperature?

The car anology shows the issues with varous measurement systems. My 911 had temperature readouts for both water and for oil. When I started it up, the water temp would rise up fast. The oil temp would lag behind, and quite noticeably.

    Refractometer and hydrometer not agreeing

If entering the world of the Pill would make my lfe more complicated, I don't want it. I'm not the guy who happily builds raspberry pi control modules and such like that.

    Refractometer and hydrometer not agreeing

That is helpful, thanks. I'm with @bike2brew in that at my age, it is difficult to exactly see where the hydrometer is floating. And while all the subsequent info abut calibrating refractometers is helpful, it's a bit of a thing. You know, I always thought the kegland Pill tilt system was a...

Pre fermentation. OG. Where would I find out more about "wort correction factor"

    Refractometer and hydrometer not agreeing

So, my hydrometer says 1052 and my refractometer says 1048. I have been careful with my hydrometer readings. Spin the pipe, watch closely, ensure the surface tension is not messing up the view. And I have carefully calibrated my refractometer. Cleaning it, adding room temp water...

    When to dry hop

@worlddivides the clarity thing is interesting. That is the yeast doing its thing. I was listening to a podcast, can't recall which. Was about making a hop drink. Not a zero alcohol beer, but a drink where no grain is used. Just hops and water. The question was what effect would yeast...

    When to dry hop

That makes sense. I don't see that aroma would be blown off, as the aromas are dissolved in the liquid. If they were just sitting as gases in the head space, they would disappear once you tried to pull a pint. A couple hours ago I finished brewing an English brown ale. My hop bong is...

    First Starsan purge

So is that for pushing co2 through jumper lines? And is there a mnemonic reason for having red and yellow?
  14. kohalajohn

    First Starsan purge

@Deadalus you are correct. I went downstairs and sure enough, the second keg had stalled, with gas escaping but some liquid not being pushed through. I'm just going to write this out, to get it straight in my head. I chopped and swapped one of the tubes. I made a liquid to gas jumper. It...

    First Starsan purge

I'm relieved that we do it the same way. Fill the first keg with starsan. Invert the keg and do a small drain out the prv. When the gas has pushed the liquid out, leave the keg filled wtih 100% co2. I would like to know about shelf life of starsan. I thought that as long as I keep...

    First Starsan purge

Doing my very first purge of a serving keg, using liquid instead of gas. Hope I'm doing it right. I have a fermenter bubbling away. After the fermenter are two serving kegs in a daisy chain. And then a bucket at the very end. From the fermenter, a gas/gas jumper pushes gas into a serving...

    When to dry hop

Good morning, all I know this has been discussed, but I just viewed a Brulosophy experiment that showed that adding the hops when pitching the yeast, gave results with no sensory difference from dry hopping at full Krausen, or even at end of fermentation. If true, this is a convenient method...

Could I use a syringe through a ball lock to add gelatin finings?

Yes, kidney filtering works great. I can offer that as a service if someone has beer they need me to clarify.

    New Hop Bong

Yup. I'll hop when it's at full krausen. Will have to take the keg out of the fridge to attach the bong. I now see that with this system, I can't start any german lagers or NEIPAs until I finish a closed transfer on this batch. From pitch to closed transfer, the airlock has to stay on...
