What did I cook this weekend.....

The spent grain from yesterday's belgian quad made the tortillas I used in these chicken burritos tonight. My first time using spent grain. The last bite was all tortilla and it was a spiritual experience. The smell of the grain as it was being milled. As it was steeping in the hot water. As it...

DIPA Feedback for me, if you're bored

Following up on this. I brewed it as-is only I added 1 oz of Amarillo to the dry hop because I needed to get rid of them. Mouthfeel is medium. Average head when poured from the keg. Sweet orangey aroma. Color is a dark hazy reddish-orange. Bitterness is smooth and present but not overpowering...

Counterflow Wort Chiller Build (and use)

A while back I read this post and it inspired me. Instead of running out to buy new copper tubing I just uncoiled my immersion chiller, lubed it up and ran it through an old garden hose. That was the easy part. The hard part was all of those fittings. You have to know how to solder or you'll...

    Confession Time

Where's that guy... The one who dips a pint glass in his actively fermenting wort and drinks most of it before the beer even stops fermenting. And spends most of his week on the toilet... And then wonders why the remaining wort is always infected... Where is that guy? He wins the gold medal for...

I might have screwed up my starter

Chucking a hot flask of yeast into 5 gallons of cool wort shouldn't really do anything. The cool wort would cool down that flask liquid pretty quick I'd think. You say you didn't know the temp of your wort though. "It wasn't boiling" implies to me that it was still super hot and probably...

    Foamy beer!!!

You overcarbonated. I literally just did exactly what you did 2 weeks ago. I set it on 30psi with the intention of leaving it 2 days, which always works for me (another couple days after that at serving pressure and it's ready). I had to leave a night for work and the 2 days extended to 3. I...

DIPA Feedback for me, if you're bored

I'm good with 7.6% and it's technically within the style guidelines. I like nugget, yeah. That's why it's in there. Never dry hopped with it but I googled around and nobody anything terrible to say about it generally speaking.

DIPA Feedback for me, if you're bored

So I thought a little residual sweetness would help balance the 100 IBU's. So wasn't sure if drying out with sugar would just accentuate the bitterness. Thoughts?

How many brews have you dumped??

Oh I do. But my favorite style is IPA or IIPA so I'm always comparing mine to the best of the best (to my palate). It's like watching a porno and then catching a glimpse of yourself naked in the mirror. Am I making any sense? zc

How many brews have you dumped??

Rage over the low quality of my own dumb beer in comparison to HT. Rage, I say.

How many brews have you dumped??

I dump my IPAs a lot actually. I live near Vermont and drink a fairly steady supply of Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, Lawson's, 14th Star stuff... IPAs that (in my opinion) are so intricate and well constructed that any IPA I cook up in my stupid basement just tastes amateur. Not all of them, but...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

Was watching some guys bottle beer. First guy had done it a few times before. Other guy was brand new and was interested in helping. Inexperienced guy says: "What happens if we don't fill the bottle up all the way before we cap it?" Experienced guy gets very serious and says: "Never EVER...

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

You just changed my mind. Maybe you CAN brew to save money, if it keeps you out of the bars and restaurants, because of the incidentals. Good point you just made here.

    Home Brewing = Saving Money?

People brew beer because people like to make stuff. Tinker. Have a hobby. See if they can impress their friends. See if they can make a beer they like. Challenge themselves. All of that stuff. I make beer but I also make my own pasta from time to time. Grill my own steaks. Make my own hot sauce...

    Stink bugs in beer

At 4am this morning I woke up disoriented with my head pounding and a sick stomach. I was naked in the middle of the kitchen floor, surrounded by bugs. Hundreds of them. I was covered with their stink. Minutes of vomiting led to hours of dry heaving. I looked in the mirror and I didn't like what...
