What I did for beer today

So I'm in between brews and was bored. No school, no basketball practice, so I decided to finally do something with the hundreds of beers caps I've been saving. My original is to make a coffee table with them but wanted to do a trial one first.

My first brew.. Should have read up

Like most are saying don't toss it. Let it sit and bottle it 4 weeks after the day you brewed it. I have pitched yeast before at 80F due to impatience and not being informed and those beers all turned our fine. Try one a week after bottling then another one. You will be surprised how hard...

What craft beer do you secretly despise?

+1 on the Pumpkin Beers. Dogfish Head 90 and 120 minute. Rogue Dead Guy - just isn't very drinkable to me Anything by Abita with the exception of Purple Haze

    Adding cocoa nibs to secondary...

Using nibs for the first time here in a few weeks. Probably use the vodka method for sanitizing as it seems the best. Would there be any benefit or drawback to using one of the flavored vodka varieties? I only ask because I have some caramel vodka lying around.

    Hops in the Fermenter

I always siphon or pour the kettle through a strainer so that hops do not make it into the fermenter. When I dry hop I always use hop bag.

    Dry Hopping Technique

I have used the Shot glass technique. I can see the problem doing this method with a carboy but works great in a bucket.

    Do Dry Hops swim?

JJ900 - trust the posters here on HBT. I always ferment for 4 weeks and I have had great luck. 12-17 days is probably enough for the beer to ferment out but that last week will leave you with a cleaner tasting and possibly clearer beer.

    What's your profession?

High School Social Studies Teacher (American Government, Sociology, and Economics). Coach Varsity Football (Special Teams Coordinator and Asst. Defensive Coordinator) and Boys Basketball Coach (Freshman). I don't do much brewing between August and February. Usually get a few done during...

How honest are you when reviewing your own beer?

Like most of you I am overly critical compared to my friends and family who drink my beer. One of my least favorite beers I have made actually turned a co-worker of mine from only drinking Bud Light to trying a different 6 pack of craft beer every week. He said that my beer is better than...

Longest You've Gone Without Brewing Beer

I am a HS Football and Basketball coach so from February until August I typically brew once a month. Once football season and school rolls around I do not have the time to brew so I am lucky to get one in. I am usually able to get a few batches in during basketball season. Last year I...

    Beersmith Mash Efficiency Question

So I have started to dial in my system on my last few brews but I am still coming across one issue. When I input my Pre-Boil Gravity Beersmith sets your Mash Efficiency. My issue with this is that my Pre-Boil Gravity is typically a few points higher than what is projected by Beersmith but...

Need some help with an IPA recipe

Any of the C hops should compliment Cascade pretty well. I've never used whole leaf hops before so I don't know how much to use in place of pellets. My suggestion would be to use Chinook or Centennial for bittering and use the Cascade for flavor. I've made a few IPA's using Chinook and...

What I did for beer today

Had another great Brew Day! Finally I am beginning to dial in the specifics of my system and starting to recreate past recipes with great accuracy. Today I did my third Highland Gaelic Ale Clone.

Suggestion on what to brew next

    Dry Hopping in Primary Question

I've never had an issue with getting the bag out with the shot glass technique. I will probably just use my method I usually use in the secondary as I don't want to risk getting a clog while racking to the bottling bucket. Thanks for the help.

    Dry Hopping in Primary Question

Currently I am fermenting a "DeadRinger" knockoff and I will be brewing a Gaelic Ale clone tomorrow. As I only have 2 fermenting vessels I realized I will be forced to dryhop the DeadRinger in Primary. I have never dryhopped in Primary, I have always used secondary. I use the shot glass at...

    Fermentation Temp Question
