Racking mead to Secondary / Tertiary

I am currently experiencing a slow/stuck fermentation on my first batch of Traditional Mead (and first mead as well). This happened IMMEDIATELY after racking to secondary 6 weeks after brewing. From reading a bit on the subject on this forum, I believe my best bet is to pitch more yeast...

Racking mead to Secondary / Tertiary

Thanks...I will rack it tonight. I kind of figured I would have to rack it a few times. What is normal? Racking every few weeks after secondary?

Racking mead to Secondary / Tertiary

Gents, I have my first batch of traditional mead (15lb OB honey, water, WL Sweet Mead yeast - ONLY) in the primary. It will have been fermenting away steadily for 6 weeks as of this Saturday. When the heck do I rack it to secondary? I have been told by a few sources to wait until it...

Thanks for your input. It is my personal philosophy is to always use the best ingredients - life is too short to do otherwise. Cheers :mug: BrewStef

    Quality Ingredients=

Greetings, I have read that you should spend a few extra dollars to get QUALITY ingredients. I wholeheartedly agree. The question is: What differentiates quality ingredients from, uh, non-quality ingredients? The LHBS has stuff, I buy it, thats it. Sometimes it is online, sometimes...

    Whirlpool - The big How-To

Herr Kaiser, Thanks again for this how-to. I used this whirlpool technique very effectively this last weekend. I did not have a whole lot of trub as I was just brewing a heffeweitzen, but it did form a nice cone nonetheless. Cheers :mug: BrewStef

    Tasting time arrived last weekend.

The Pom and Cherry sound delicious. I always wanted to try a Pom. How long did you let them age for? What yeast did you use? Did you think they would be not as sweet? Cheers :mug: Stefan

I think I want to give wine a shot...

SWMBO gets wicked headaches from sulfites, so finding an alternative would be great. Perhaps the campden tablets does not have a sufficient quantity to result in a bad headache - perhaps only if you add additional sulfites for long-term ageing, but I would rather not risk it if possible. Any...

I think I want to give wine a shot...

Interesting thread! :mug: I too am a homebrewer that wants to expand my horizons to include wine. Is there an alternative to sulfites which works just as effectively? Cheers! Brewstef

    Whirlpool - The big How-To

Thanks for the info. I think I will just stick with a basic full-boil pot and siphon it the old fasioned way. I really like the idea of doing everything possible to make the process easier and more consistent, and don't mind spending a little money (no brewsculptures are in my near future...

    Whirlpool - The big How-To

Kai, Thanks for the response, but why would a ring connecting to a spigot help the whirlpool? Sorry if this is too much of a Noob question. Happy Easter. Stefan

    Whirlpool - The big How-To

Kai, Can you get a good whirlpool going if you have a kettle with a ball valve? How about if it also has a thermometer? Would the probe in the thermometer get too much in the way or would it disrupt the whirlpooling effect? I am thinking about getting this...
