    better bottles

Greetings. I am using both glass and betterbottles (no spigot). My plan is to use betterbottles as often as possible and to use glass when I run out of betterbottles. The only concern is cleaning them as they ARE plastic and CAN scratch if you are not careful when using a carboy brush...

    Aeration stone sanitation

Thanks for your responses. I will turn on the air before immersing it in wort, and turn it off once removed from the wort, then soak it in my brewday bucket-o-iodophor both before and after use. Cheers! BrewStef

    Aeration stone sanitation

Are aeration stones difficult to santize with all those thousands of little holes? Do you just clean and soak in a santitizer along with everything else? I am thinking about getting one and was wondering about this. Thanks. BrewStef

    First mead, lots of questions

Regarding commercial meaderies, I really like Redstone Meadery in Boulder, CO. They can be reached at www.redstonemeadery.com where you can purchase online. Try their traditional mead and one of their nectars - they are very different. They have melomels, pyments, and metheglins as well...

    What's Brewing This Weekend? (5/13-13)

I'm doing a batch of Joe's Ancient Orange Mead. I am curious to see how it works using bread yeast. This recipe was well touted on www.gotmead.com and is a great mead for beginner meadmakers (like myself) and is drinkable alot earlier than most mead recipes. :mug: Cheers to you, Joe...

    First mead, lots of questions

Adding nutrient definitely did jumpstart the fermentation, and it is still bubbling away steadily now at around 1 blip every 35 seconds. Swirling the must 3-4 times a day for 2 days helped as well...but from what I have read I do not think this should be done except as a last resort. Keep...

    First mead, lots of questions

Congratulations! Don't rush racking mead. I learned this the hard way - I racked at 1 blip every 17 seconds and after racking fermentation all but stopped. I would suggest waiting until you get to less than two bubbles per minute to rack. I suggest also racking to a 5 gal carboy so that...

    My first mead

I suggest not sticking to any particular schedule, just let it be until it is "ready" to be racked to secondary - when most of the fermentation is done, say one blip every 30 seconds or so. I made the mistake of racking my traditional mead too early to secondary, thinking that it was on the...

    anyone want a beer?

Congratulations you lucky @^*#$! No, I am NOT jealous. :cross: It looks way cool. I am still stuck with bottles, which is easier to transport shared brew. Bottoms up! BrewStef

    Carboy Caps

Finesse schminesse. Just force the bad boy in there. Sometime you need to work it a bit, working it from an angle...but eventially she, er it, will yield.:ban:

    A few tech questions...

Greetings, You can bottle from the bucket with spigot, just be sure to use tubing and a bottling cane - you do NOT want to bottle directly from the spigot! If you would like to check out a reputable online store, check out www.morebeer.com as they truly rock. BrewStef

    BOTTLING HEFEWEIZEN - Urgent question

I think I did resuspend some of the yeast, only on accident while I was siphoning to the bottling bucket. I have this new siphon device where you have to shake the end a bit and it starts the siphon. This works fine in some cases, but it disturbs a lot of sediment. I just ordered a pair of SS...

    BOTTLING HEFEWEIZEN - Urgent question

Gracias to both Magno and LL. I will just go a hair over 3/4 with no extra yeast. Cheers! :tank:

    BOTTLING HEFEWEIZEN - Urgent question

I am just about to bottle and have a last minute question: When bottling hefeweizen, should the yeast cake be suspended again before bottling, or just disturbed a little so SOME gets suspended, or not agitated at all? Also, should you use additional sugar for higher carbonation when bottle...

Happy Birthday Cheese, I see your taste in women is maturing as you get older! Is that your foot I see under her midriff fold? :D BrewStef

Racking mead to Secondary / Tertiary

This is what I did...any advice would be appreciated: Ok, I added 2 tsp yeast nutrient in half a cup of water around 2 days ago. Fermentation has picked up a bit. It was at one blip every 3-4 minutes, now it is a blip every 40 seconds. This is better, but a far cry from the blip every...

I think I want to give wine a shot...

No worries... Maybe someday my upgrade to "Gold Supporter" will take effect and I would be able to upload pictures.

I think I want to give wine a shot...

LPR is the Coffee Toffee Milk Stout which Dude has posted previously. I am not really into the sweet stuff, but I think SWMBO will really like it (once she has our baby in August). I think a good part of the fun of this hobby is hearing the great names people give to their beers... The...

I think I want to give wine a shot...

LL + Walker, I have been enjoying reading this thread. It has inspired me to go out and get the Winexpert Island Mist kit (Wildberry Syrah). It should arrive early next week. Has anyone here tried this kit? Prost, BrewStef
