    Pet Insurance

We've had insurance from VPI (veterinary pet insurance) for our labradoodle since he was a pup. It's about $45/month but my dog has Addisons disease and needs a daily pill and monthly shot, so we just about break even. They seem to be pretty good...maybe your rate will be lower. Good luck

Heady Topper for some San Diego brew?

You'd have better luck posting this in the "Sampling and Critiquing and Beer Swapping" section of the forum. I'm sure someone will be up for a trade for some San Diego beer. I only have 1 can of HT and it's not super fresh (I bought it in January...don't know why I still haven't finished it)...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Chilling a Columbus/Citra/Amarillo IPA now. Two boil overs, so there go my bittering hop calculations :o

    What are you drinking now?

I've never been a big fan of hoppy lagers, but Jack's Abby Hoponius Union has changed my mind. This is a damn good beer.

    What are you drinking now?

My second and last Pliny, but it went great with the steak and cheese that this London broil became

Troegs Sunshine Pils while dethatching my lawn after a long Winter

    Brewing with honey

I typically add a jar of honey (16oz?) at flameout when I make a honey-kolsch. While it doesn't add a lot of honey flavor, it's definitely there. I suppose adding to the primary or secondary would help to retain a little more honey flavor, but I like the subtlety it adds at flameout. As zippy...

    measuring your volumes

I have the same issue, so I just use a 1 gallon pitcher for all measurements. It's good to the nearest 1/4 gallon, which I think is close enough. There are instructions out there for etching the inside of your brew kettle to help with measurements, but I haven't gotten around to trying this...

    Dogs

Sorry to hear about your pup. I had a close call with mine a couple of years ago and am dreading the day that we're not as fortunate as we were then.

I'm Brewing a Weird One Today: Maple Sap Beer

After collecting about 17 gallons of sap, we boiled a bunch down and set a couple gallons aside (got tired of spending my propane making syrup.) The syrup tastes pretty amazing, and the trees are still flowing so I'm collecting more. If I can collect another 5 gallons or so I think I'll have a...

Is beer the best invention ever?

I'm going to say the transistor, which makes the ones and zeros in my computer work, which allows me to get on the internet, which allows me to read the HomeBrewTalk forum, which allows me to make beer. Thank you, transistor.

Munich Dunkel Uncle Crunkel's Munich Dunkel (AG)

I am. Last year I brewed my Oktoberfest in March and lagered it in my fridge until Oktoberfest party in the fall. It was worth the wait, but if I do that it means no lagering for 6 months, so no summer pilsner, no munich dunkel, etc. I guess I could buy another carboy and just lager at cellar...

Munich Dunkel Uncle Crunkel's Munich Dunkel (AG)

Trying to decide between brewing this and a traditional Oktoberfest or Vienna Lager. I only have one carboy and room in my fridge for lagering one batch at a time, and I've been doing Oktoberfests for the past couple of years, but I might try this one this year. John

I'm Brewing a Weird One Today: Maple Sap Beer

Awesome! We collect about 3 gallons of sap today so we're off to a pretty good start. I don't know if we're going to make syrup or beer, but either way it should be tasty. How did you calculate your OG when brewing with sap instead of water?

I'm Brewing a Weird One Today: Maple Sap Beer

Let us know! My wife and I just tapped our first two trees to collect some sap and she suggested using it in beer. We've got about a gallon in the past hour or so. I'm not sure we'll collect enough to completely replace brewing water, but at this rate we should be able to get a few gallons...

Ordinary Bitter Ol' Bitter Bastard (2013 NHC Gold medal)

It's the same recipe, except for the different grain bill, different hops, and a different yeast. :) Also, I just realized that I won't have enough Goldings for flameout (the recipe calls for 2.3oz total and my shop sells in 2oz bags and I've already got too many leftover hops). So, maybe not...

Ordinary Bitter Ol' Bitter Bastard (2013 NHC Gold medal)

I'm also brewing this today with a few mods. LHBS didn't have US Goldings so I'm using EKG, and I'm using crystal 10 and 80 to get to the same SRM. Also, I'm repitching some London Ale yeast I've been using for my bitters. Hmmm...come to think about it maybe it's a completely different...

My recipe for today's brewing session

Good luck! I've brewed a fair share of APA but have never used pilsner malt in them...what's the thinking here?

    I accidentally froze my beer

Thanks for all the replies! I just dry hopped this and it looked pretty clear and...well, liquid...so I think it'll be fine. I'll find out for sure in a couple of weeks once it's kegged.
