First Brew since April of 2001 - I'm an official beginner again!

Well, it all went smoothly, well pretty smoothly. I thought I overshot my mash temp, so I quickly dumped some cold water in, and ended up undershooting it. No biggie, so I went ahead and used my herms early on to raise the temp from 145 up to 152. Worked like a champ. The only...

First Brew since April of 2001 - I'm an official beginner again!

Well, spent the afternoon cleaning everything and firing up the boilers, and heat exchanger, and wort chiller, and testing out the new camlock fittings and silicone hoses. Man I love these fittings and hoses. My ancient march 809 pump is still working like a champ! Everything is clean and...

Got the fermentation chamber built. Still need to work on the keezer collar. I'll be using my keezer with a thermostatically controlled fan to provide cool air to the fermentation chamber. Now I just need to clean everything up really good and run through some tests. Tomorrow morning I brew!

Seems as if Foil is the consensus, so next time I'll probably go that route. I did step this up to about 3 liters and got a nice little yeast cake going. Put the starter in the fridge to crash the yeast, and I'll decant it and use it tomorrow.

Hmmm, Going by memory and I've always used the airlocks on the past. I did step it up a bit last night and aerated the 'wort' pretty well then. I'll have to do some more research on that. It certainly makes sense, since I do have oxygen to aerate the wort for the brew. The starter is...

First Brew since April of 2001 - I'm an official beginner again!

So Here's the 'Brewery'. Doesn't look like much, but it's a single pump 2 tier HERMS capable brewing system. What that means is I can use the little kettle on the left to raise the temperature of the mash (HERMS = Heat Exchange Recirculating Mash) by running the liquid in the mash through a coil...

First Brew since April of 2001 - I'm an official beginner again!

So, looking at my brewing records, apparently I haven't brewed since 2001. I used to do 10 gallon full grain batches with a herms type of mash. We moved, and I never really unboxed my equipment or got things setup. But I've got a get together scheduled and just enough time to get a brew...

    Cracked Carboy Usable? (Help)

My wife has been threatening to steal my 6.5 gallon one to use as a terrarium, since it doesn't have those thicker strips on it! :drunk:

    Too Relaxed, Not Worried Enough?

You and I are on very similar paths. My last entries in my brew log were 2001. I just pulled my gear out of storage and am in the process of organizing and getting ready to brew. Oh, and this time I decided to make a real keezer/fermentation chamber to go with it. The UPS guy will be...

    How did you find us?

Was missing brewing several years ago, but had too much on my plate to pick it up again. Just recently decided to go for it again, and started reading the threads. Now I'm losing sleep because of all the brew porn and can't wait to get my new brewery built out and ready to go.:tank:

    Howdy from Reno

I did 5 gallon batches for quite a while, but realized I like the output too much, and that the input for 10 wasn't all that more! So, figuring that now it makes sense if I can brew a 10 gallon batch, there's no reason not to ferment it in 10 gallons instead of 2 5 gallon carboys. I'm going to...

Thanks KB! Walking through the steps in my head. Bought a 15 gallon Plastic Conical today. Sorting through all the old gear and going to clean it up and make sure everything works. Should be a lot of fun!

    Howdy from Reno

Well, I signed up here a few years ago, but it's been even longer since I brewed. I don't even want to say how long its been! Could be almost a decade... But I made the plunge today and went and bought a sack of grain, some hops, some yeast, and pulled all of my old equipment out of...
