OG as it relates to water volumes

I've brewed about 10 extract batches... this is my first go at a partial mash. Also my first time using BeerSmith. Why do I feel like something is wrong here? In terms of this being a partial boil... ending up with 3.13 gallons post boil. Then adding water to the fermenter to arrive at 5...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

First run at a partial mash on Saturday.. a Two Hearted clone. A mashup of a few different recipes, and a lot of reading on HBT..

    Cold Break ??

No it won't hurt to strain the wort. I will say though that I stopped trying to strain after only my first couple batches. FWIW.. I've found rather than dealing with the pain of a clogged strainer.. I would rather just let it settle out in the primary.

    Cold Break ??

The yeast cake in my batch was not "fluffy" either. Everything compacted down nicely for me resulting in a clear beer.

From what I have read, both here and otherwise, you are correct that it is UV light that does the harm. The shorter wavelength light, if you will. Incandescent bulbs can give off light considered to be in the UV range.. the amount can differ. This is what I always thought, different types of...

    Alcohol purchase waiver?

I completely agree. I don't completely understand having one customer sign the waiver but not the next?? only within 5 years?? Unless they actually sell to a minor... or sell to an adult knowing full well there is a minor waiting with open mouth.. or sell to an intoxicated adult.. then the...

    Home Brew Stairway Storage

Got the door framed and hung. Decided to insulate the door too.. so I sandwiched the plywood in first and then pieced together some scraps of foam board with aluminum tape. White board was cheap at the orange box store.. so now I have a dry erase door for making notes/dates of fermentations...

    Spotty English Pub Ale

Not quite sure what these floating brown spots/specks are?? Yeast?? Today is the eighth day in the primary. Haven't tested for FG yet. If I have a sniff at the end of the blow off tube.. it's smells ok.. kinda pungent.. but ok. Its hard to get a decent pic. Input/advice would be...

I thought about that.. but I could very easily undo this whole thing if I need to. Our basement is unusually dry. Both the walls and the floor have a waterproof sealant and multiple layers of paint applied... builder said we have a 20 year waterproof warranty.. but who knows. In the areas...

    Sauce for pulled pork?

+1 for the vinegar base We like to make something with a little spice to it.. Saute chopped onions, rough chopped garlic, and sliced chili peppers until soft. Add salt, pepper, and a bit of sugar. Pour in some vinegar and add ketchup until you get the consistency you like. Strain the...

    Home Brew Stairway Storage

Sooo... this new "hobby" is now starting to change the landscape of the house. I've grown tired of having the equipment in the kitchen all the time.. so I decided to repurpose some space in the basement. The goal is to create a temperature controlled "cabinet." It will be insulated...

    Michigan

Haven't been here too long.. but welcome. I'm just a few miles west of New Haven. Seems like I've seen a ton of MI home brewers here...

3/16" Copper Tubing for Immersion Chiller?

and.. (someone can correct me if I'm wrong) with such a small amount of liquid running through, the extra length doesn't make a big difference. With the small ID by the time the liquid covers a small distance it's already heated up and the rest of the run does no good. My .02 would be to try...
