Story Time - How did you get into brewing and craft beer?

I had to think back to try to recall what, specifically, made me want to try brewing... And for the life of me I can't remember a singular event. I do know that my history with beer is similar to what others have shared... That being starting out drinking macro lagers. I never really drank as a...

    First brew day

Congrats on your first brew day! I believe beersmith defaults to imperial unit? I can't remember, and I'm not at my computer. But you can, I believe, get it to use US units, or metric, as well if I recall correctly. Keep in mind that IF your volume was slightly off, it might just be a matter...

    Clumping head

Wow, commenting so I can see peoples answers. Never seen anything like this.

Take good notes!!! Take good notes!!!

I set up my recipes in Beersmith, and in the Notes section I add some extra info (eg. water additions, if I am going to use different volumes/temps/etc that aren't the same as what Beersmith gives, ie from Priceless Brewing). I make one copy of the recipe and put it into an "In Progress"...

Am I Oxidizing My Beer With My Bottling Wand

This thread has gone sideways, but getting back to the original question... I have never used a spring loaded bottling wand, only the standard wands, but I've never seen the beer come out with any amount of force. I can't imagine the spring versions are much difference, beyond, I assume...

    When to pull dryhops

Update, this brew may not be as far off as I feared. I tried another, more carbonated, bottle tonight, and it was fairly enjoyable. It had a more fruit-forward aroma...not strong, but present... And decent flavour, decently balanced, still more bitter than intended, but not bad,and not overly...

Am I Oxidizing My Beer With My Bottling Wand

OP are you saying you are getting bubbling/swirling at the start of each bottle? Or just the start of the first bottle?

    When to pull dryhops

Haha, I hear ya. I've grown to really enjoy commercial NEIPA's, but research tells me that my chances of producing a winner with bottling is slim. I decided to give this a shot though, just for fun, and for science. :) While the majority of "NEIPA in bottles" discussions I've seen have said...

    When to pull dryhops

I guess this is a bit of an aside to the topic of this thread, but I found this comment to be a little out of place. Given what we've discussed why would you suggest changing from 3.5 gallon batches to 1 gallon batches? I do 3.5 gal batches because: - I brew in the kitchen, and a pre-boil...

    When to pull dryhops

All good advice. I haven't done enough different brews yet to be able to fully predict my loss to trub when going from primary to bottling bucket, and how it will change with different beer styles/recipes. Typically for me , with 3.5 gallon batches (3.5 gal into primary, I dump it all in, I...

    When to pull dryhops

I have only ever done a couple brews previous with dry hopping. The first time I tossed them in loose and I ended up having a hell of a time racking to the bottling bucket, as even at the end of primary the trub was extremely loose and I ended up leaving a lot of beer behind. I considered hop...

    Question on NEIPA

I just tried my first crack at an NEIPA as well, bottled middle of last week. Taste samples at bottling were intensely bitter, despite the bulk of my hop additions being whirlpool and dry hops. I opened my tester bottle last night, even though it was only 4 days in the bottle and I knew it...

    When to pull dryhops

I've set my anticipation low for this brew. It smelled amazing while bottling, tons of peach and other fruit. Last night, just because I was too curious to stop myself, I tried my little tester bottle, knowing it wouldn't be carbonated yet. Pretty much all of the peach notes seem to be gone...

    Festbier BierMuncher's OktoberFAST Ale (AG)

This was one of my best brews to date, but unfortunately the last couple bottles I've opened have not been great... Didn't age well for some reason. Not sure if oxidation issues? Tasting an almost metallic, acrid sort of flavour, and aroma to go with it. Still drinkable, but lost all that...

    When to pull dryhops

I had to remove the bag at some point to rack. (Bag was lining the entire bucket, not just a closed hop bag. I got that tip from someone here many months ago... I think it may have been JonnyRotten actually) I guess I could have just lifted one side of the bag and racked.from under/beside the...

    When to pull dryhops

The haze is supposed to substantially be from proteins and from active fermentation reacting with dryhop additions. And no, I didn't intend to say I wanted to achieve haze by leaving lots of yeast in suspension. I meant that, because I was aiming for a cloudy beer anyways, I didn't really care...

American IPA Trilium Melcher Street Clone

Bottled today..I'm setting my hopes pretty low, I don't think this one turned out properly, but I reserve judgement until they've had some time to condition. Not hazy, but with a lot of suspended debris... Not sure if it's hops (I used a large bag for dryhops so weird of I got a bunch into the...
