Shut down leisure activities-what are y'all doing to pass the time?

Nightmares for me. I was learning hex code and programming on old Data General ECLIPSE models back in 1987. The Army still had stuff running on core memory and punch cards back then. If I recall correctly it took about five or six lines of 16bit w/ parity just to clear memory prior to boot. I...

    Cats

What matters is the fuzzy guy found someone who cares about him - even if he does take an occasional dump in the sink. It takes me a while to get used to doing #2 in a strange place ....

What does a filter actually remove?

When I first started to brew I used city tap water through my refrigerator's carbon filter. My beer had that medicinal "Band Aid" flaw that was magnified by the extra Cascade hops I added, so I changed up my water game. If you can do a 5gal brew on purchased water and ingredients for less than...

How thick is a glass carboy??

There's nothing like watching the progress of a brew as it ferments in glass but given the drawbacks, stainless steel has a lot going for it. As a new brewer I bought one too many of those glass jugs....

Don't wait until secondary to add fruit puree.

"I once poured a six pack of Sam Adams Cherry Wheat down the drain because it tasted like cough syrup." That's one of my biggest gripes with Sam Adams. IMO, they love adding a bit much caramel malt in some of their imbalanced recipes but others are done right. There has to be a good...

    Cats

Happy Easter to everyone from the Rascal King who's now enjoying his 14th spring. Not quite as spry as he once was but still loves the hunt and a sunbeam.

    Dogs

One of my boys is now the proud owner of a new dog. He lives down in Georgia and on his way back from Ft. Gordon a hungry stray followed him right to the door. The kid does community service at local shelter so the dog immediately went for a ride to get checked out. The shelter didn't have...

Video consoles: What should I buy, I'm bored.

My kids played SKYRIM years ago and I hijacked their game because I grew up on D&D. Got the expansions for it, too. Had a 2600 Atari as a kid back in the late '70's and 80's. Hardware and graphics much better now and there's always a trade off with options. I went with gaming choices even if...

What do you think would happen if you fermented this..

What the heck is wrong with youse guys? Everyone knows it's better with the Two D's - drywall and Doritos.

    Recipe Interpretations

It's ASSUMED all recipes are typically brewed to a scale of 5gal batches, but with homebrewing, you never know because a lot of the recipes are done for personal tastes, too. Not everyone will have the same equipment or method so your best bet when using a new setup is to find people who tend...

    Is it ready to bottle?

I'd say you're safe. I use carboys and don't normally take gravity readings to prevent the chances of infection. My beer stays in the primary for exactly three weeks waiting for the fermentation to finish up and my cue is seeing the yeast drop as CO2 offput tapers off. Gravity readings are done...

    Cats

Sympathies for your kitty. Sent mine on her way during the winter of 2015 and it still pains me. I used to do some odd jobs in the blimp hangar and recall some long days and cold feet. Don't miss that one bit.

Trying a different technique for fermenting a hefeweizen

Then your option would be to use a yeast less apt to produce those. WLP320 American might work and produces a mild wheat beer if fermented on the cool side, low 60'sF.

I want to start BIAB but I a Noob and don't know what I'm doing!!

It may be the browser and blockers set to "paranoid" level I tend to use, too. Pinterest and IMGur links get tinkered with in order for me to see pics, so I wouldn't be surprised his older pics aren't viewable for me.

Using Simcoe, worried about cat piss

My cat recommends only noble hops. He says it's better to be safe than sorry. o_O

    Cats

Cats are predators and will sometimes use their humans as hunting targets - especially the young ones. They are quite aware of you even when you're not watching or they seem as if they're ignoring you. Give them something else to "hunt" besides YOU .... suspended strings, yarn balls, toys...

    Cats

So, you have a nipper, eh? It's something to watch for, definitely. One of my Fuzzy Boys bit my wife on the arm out of fear when she was washing him one day and it made her acutely sick to the point she had to take a few days from work. The bite was deep and caused septicemia, necrosis, and...

    Letting your kids help?

My kids aren't interested in the process. Their time is eaten up with other things and beer or mead making is more or less my own little hobby. The oldest is a foodie, making sourdough, odd pickled vegetable combos, cold brewed coffee, and other such stuff in his spare time. He has a disdain...

What else can I brew with Hefeweizen yeast?

A basic 50/50 wheat and Munich weizenbock would be my winter warmer choice. Use about 2oz of Hallertau Hersbreucker hops first wort around 4AAU. I'd take some of the wort and water it down some for a fresh starter done during the boil. WLP300 is strong yeast and will run right through something...

Cheap ways to get bottles? (Salt Lake City)

My way to get 12oz commercial bottles is to use up those holiday gift cards. There are plenty of them to be had if you want to give them away. I bought my own set of 22oz bottles a few years ago and never give them out for free. If I was really hard pressed the local recycle center has...
