    dumb question/gap setting/feeler gauge

Agree --- top is inches bottom is millimeters.... put two together. I use the exact same device to gap my corona mill to .032 inches I use the .022 and the .010 or sometimes I use the .024 and the .008 or ... well you get the grist of it

    Yeast partly frozen in shipping

I have frozen yeast many times and often do so deliberately to extend it's life. I have froze both dry and liquid, both the WLP Vials and the Wyeast Smack Pak. I have made starters and frozen them as well. Allow the liquid to thaw and make a starter and the yeast will be fine. For some reason...

    Driving in snow

I live in western central portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan and my house in the woods is on a hill about 1200 feet above sea level. About 50 miles west as the crow flies is Lake Michigan at about 600 feet above sea level. This time of year the west/north west winds blow cold arctic air...

    Marty's Basement Brewery

There is one thing I have not seen and that is fresh air in. I use propane indoors and have since 2011 and have never set off the CO Monitor (I test it and check it). (I also have and explosive gas monitor placed mid wall level for propane -- NG placement is higher up as it is lighter than...

Building First AG Recipe. Advice Needed!

Mostly Dry hopping gets you aroma, possible some flavor as some of the oils will get in there. Most hop flavor comes in the last 15 minutes of the boil and even at flame out as the heat will both release and evaporate the oils which provide flavor and aroma...

Building First AG Recipe. Advice Needed!

I think the hops are a little lite for an IPA. You may want to consider adding 1/2 to 1 OZ Centennial at the 30 or 20 minute mark and move the Cascade to 10 Minute. The Crystal Hops seem a little out of place here and I think the citrus of the centennial and cascade are just going to over power...

    Homebrew Wimp

I plan on brewing tomorrow morning. Forecast for west winds 5 to 10 mph scattered snow showers and lake effect snow. The high temp is 25F.... but that will not stop me, no way-- cause I brew inside!

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I will brew a English Pale Ale (ESB) tomorrow morning. The first brew of 2015 is batch number 123. In 2014 my first batch was number 95 an Oatmeal Stout on 03JAN14 and my last batch was 122 a Black German Lager on 27DEC14. I did 27 five gallon batches in 2014 for a total of 135 gallons of beer...

    Opinions-opinions-I need opinions...

I use a lot of Briess 2 Row both pale ale and brewers malt. I prefer brewers malt as it is less grainy and slightly lighter in color.

New to all grain brewing, water to grain ratio question

I had no idea such things existed, defatted peanut butter powder. I make a cranberry walnut Christmas Ale every year (my sisters love it) and I have head issues due to the fat in the walnuts ... I have tried many things to remove the fat but without success. I wonder if I can find a defatted...

New to all grain brewing, water to grain ratio question

The fat from the peanut butter is going to impact the head you get. So do not expect much foam if any at all.

    Corona mill.

I also have a corona mill and use a gauge to set the gap to .032" and get a consistent 82% efficiency and rarely have sparge issues. Just keep the run off slow and steady and don't get in a hurry.

do you have to boil for rehydrating?

Agreed, any type of municipal water will have some type of chlorination in it so you will need to treat for that, then sterilize by boiling. Bottled drinking water is good alternative as it has already been sterilized (unless you just drank from the bottle - so do do that). I use my tap water...

The obnoxious but not so obnoxious build or buy a new pc thread questions thread thre

I agree with Homercidal, i5 is good but an i7 is better choice for long term usability. SSD is fast and an excellent choice for boot device and for high usage files. Use SATA for large volume and less used files. DO NOT USE Windows 8, my testing of 8.1 has proven it a much better release, but...
