Popped the top of my first brew!

Awesome and congratulations on your first success. Now the real work begins. You have to decide what to brew next and what changes you want to make in your process.

    What is Apfelwein

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it yet but it's a hard cider.

I haven't brewed this one in a while but I might get on it again soon. Anybody else try it and have something they'd like to add or comment on?

Specialty IPA: Rye IPA Denny Conn's Wry Smile Rye IPA

Yeah, I get 1.080 or higher with this quite regularly but I think it may be a fluke with my system as most people are getting in the mid 70's. *edit* I just edited the original post to reflect Denny's gravity numbers.

Whats the best brew pub area in the US?

I hear there are a lot of great brew pups in Seattle, Washington (Naked City comes to mind) and in Portland, Oregon. If you are going to be in New England, be sure to check out Sebago Brewing Co. in Portland, Maine and Sea Dog in Bangor, Maine.

    Northernbrewer!

Cool. They probably figured you ordered enough stuff so a couple cups wouldn't hurt

    Can Starting Gravity be calculated?

There are too many variables for anyone to give you a precise measurement of your OG. The best anyone can do is approximate it based on the recipe. Things like your fermentation temperature, yeast strain, how much it's been moved during fermentation, even the particular brand of grain or extract...

Do Muntons carb tabs create more sediment in the bottles?

Try rolling the bottles a little on a towel just enough to loosen the sediment in the bottles and get it back into suspension. Don't shake them, just roll them. After that, let them set for another week or two. This should help get rid of the flakes.

    Fired for being too hot??

She's pretty but I don't see anything all that spectacular there. To each their own I guess.

Pressure treated lumber for hop trellis??

I've never heard of the chemicals from the wood getting into the hops. I don't think it's an issue.

    Turn-key refrigerator/fermentation chamber for under $225?

That's the controller I use. It's simple to use, simple to install, accurate and requires no modifications to the freezer or wiring to use.

    Mash Tun Problems

+1 Gotta spread some love for batch sparging!!! There are a lot of things that can make your runoff stick like this. The primary thing is draining too fast too soon. Try opening the drain 1/4 to 1/2 for the first quarter or so of the runnings then you can open it up all the way. It could also...

    Are there degrees of sanitation?

Spending an extra ten or fifteen minutes to sanitize after cleaning can mean the difference between enjoying a great brew after two months of labor or dumping two months of labor down the drain.

I think my first beer is done
