I've been intrigued about hop combos and their biotransformations ever since I heard Stan Hieronymus speak about them.
Using nugget and chinook in the whirl pool and/or dry hop produce something much fruitier/tropical than either on their own. I've tried it and it seems to be true.
Has anyone...
Looking at the Citra patent...
Citra's parents aren't patented. Has anyone tried to track down those hops? The USDA is usually really good about providing plants to people in the US if they have access to them.
I guess I was just wondering if that approach makes sense since it looks like others aren't doing it that way.
A bunch of males open pollinating a female with some desirable characteristics and growing out seedlings... Or are there other strategies that people recommend?
Maybe I'll just go...
I've tracked down a few male hops. I'm thinking about open pollinating a tahoma female (heavy producer/fairly disease resistant) to find males to cross to something with better flavor/aromatics (cascade, cashmere or cenetennial?) in a few years.
Does that make sense? I notice that this doesn't...
Is anyone growing non-traditional IPA hops that are worth growing?
Anybody growing Zenith? Sorachi Ace? Or the New Zealand non-proprietary ones like Wakatu or Southern Cross?
Yeah, in my experience fresh hops suit certain styles of beer better than others. I now keep the grain bill light and go heavy on the late hop additions and dry hop. Too heavy and you can run into a grassy component with fresh hops so I haven't had much luck with fresh hopped big IPA's. This...
@Sbe2 How do you like comet? I was thinking I'd try to track down some rhizomes.
Have you brewed with it yet? How does it grow compare to cascade with regards to production/aroma/etc.?
That green flavor... I'm still trying to figure it out as well.
At this point I use roughly 80% home grown, but still buy some citra (or other fruity hops) for dry hopping to really kick it up a notch. I'd love to move to close to 100% home grown without sacrificing flavor.
Spray mineral oil. It'll wipe out a bunch of the current bugs. And then spray again in a week or so to get the bugs that hatch.
For a more specific/targeted control, you would need to identify the flies and figure out their life cycle (when the next batch will hatch), but spraying mineral oil...
Who grows hops for IPA's? What have you found to be the best homegrown IPA hops?
Centennial isn't as vigorous as the other C hops, but has been a good producer. It's the earliest for me (I'm picking it now). I've never sprayed in 10ish years of growing and never had disease issues, but hear...
I know I know... Reviving an old thread...
Any luck? Howd it turn out?
I'm interested in brewing with a percentage of home grown unmalted barley.
Cheers!
I think it's great people are breeding their own hops.
Where did you track down your original male rhizomes? Or do most people start from seeds they've found? I'd love to start experimenting with some crosses.
Cheers!
I just read the entire thread... Any updates for 2018?
Keep up the great work!
And, you've peaked my curiosity - anyone know of where i can track down an interesting male rhizome in Canada? I'm tempted to start playing around with some crosses (i currently have cashmere, centennial & neo1)...
