    Temp during fermentation

Try sitting your fermenter in a tub with water or wrap it in a cool damp towel in a dark closet or basement. You could also try a fan as well. If you are brewing an ale try to keep it below 70deg F if possible and above 60F. So 21.1C and 15.6 C. I just realized 28-30 is 82-86 degF. Thats way...

    this weekend

I can give you a piece of advice that I had to learn the hard way. Just because its called a smack pack do not take that to literally. If you smack it to hard like I did you could possibly spring a pin hole leak. Even though I just taped it up and it still swoll in a few hours I was still...

    Singing the praises of Oxy-Clean

Thats all I use for my bottles. 1 scoop. The only reason I let my bottles sit for a week is pure laziness. I hate cleaning bottles. The bottles I got from a friend had scotch tape on them from previous homebrew labels and I found that Oxy-Clean softens the tape but I still need to scrape it off...

Wood Cockroaches and Box Elder Bugs

How in the hell would you ever think to concoct such a nasty combo of ingredients? Does this actually work and have you done it yourself, or are you just seeing if someone would actually make this, spray it around their house, and own up to it?

    Pale Malt

My LHBS has a couple different types of pale malt. One being American and another being British (if I remember correctly anyway). I asked what the difference was and they could give me no real answer. So what is the difference really? If I made 2 batches of APA one with the American and one with...

    Singing the praises of Oxy-Clean

I cleaned 24 22oz bottles yesterday that were soaking in an ice chest with oxyclean for a week. No mineral deposits at all that I noticed. What residue that was on the bottles rinsed right off with hose water.

    First AG taste

Yes, I am rather pleased so say the least. I brewed a Mac & Jack's African Amber clone and it turned out very close. The beer has been bottled only a week but just could not wait. I can only imagine how good its going to be in 3 weeks if its that good now. Its a good thing I have 4 cases of...

WTF: Help me understand this recent cultural phenomena

WTF is up with me having to be subjected to Federally mandated drug screening (for my job at the airport) to be able to work my ass off and pay nearly 1/4 of my earnings into taxes just so some lowlife lazy piece of crap can collect welfare to go buy crank?

    First AG taste

I just cracked open a bottle from my first AG batch and all I can say is WOW. I am stoked. Glad I made the switch from extract!

    Cleaning Better Bottles?

Yes. Oxi-Clean is the sh!t. You will see there are lots of people that use it on here. If you let the solution marinate in your BB overnight chances are you will not have to scrub at all. The stuff also rinses very clean. Just fill it up about 1/4 full and shake . Do this 4-5 times and then drip...

    Cleaning Better Bottles?

DO NOT USE A CARBOY BRUSH. Yes they can scratch like a bucket.Just use a washcloth. Toss it in there with some cleaner and water and shake the hell out of it concentrating on the area's that may have gunk on them.

Just bought one of them Foodsaver contraptions

If you seal wet stuff like meat just roll up a papertowel length wise and put it between the area that will get sealed and the meat and when it vacuums the towel absorbs the moisture.

    cleaning the fermeters

I use Oxy-Clean and find it work wonders for the gunk and the smell. I just rinse out my fermenter as best as possible with the hose and by shaking it. Then I fill it up half way with water, add a scoop of Oxy-Clean, top it off and let it sit overnight. Rinse it out, drip dry, and store. If...

    Stuck ferment GOSH!

I had this happen to me on a porter. Swirl your carboy around a bit to resuspend the yeast and wait a couple more weeks. It took mine about 6 weeks to finally ferment down to 1.010. This might help.

    What do you think?

I had this happen to porter of mine a few weeks back. On the suggestion of Orfy I racked it to a 3rd fermenter after 2 weeks in the secondary. It tooka while but the beer did ferment out and is around 5.5%. From now on I will always take a hydro reading before racking to the secondary.
