    Smoked prime rib

Reading through a number of threads... you've got my mouth watering and my interest piqued. For someone entirely new to smoking... any advice re what smoker to get? I have a typical propane grill and it is rusted out/ready to be replaced. Is there such a thing as a combo grill and smoker?

    Another water report

Those itty bitty systems are to be avoided, IMO. We have, and have had for ~25 years, all the components necessary to build and sell RO systems with that type of configuration, but we don't. Those systems are expensive to operate because when you need to replace a filter you also have to pay...

Those are simply sediment filters - meaning they will filter out UNdissolved grit. That's a fine thing to do as well water can be high in sediment. But a sediment filter does nothing for the dissolved substances in the water. Russ

Ugh. Yes - the easy answer is RO. You'll want a whole house softener or you'll have problems with your water heater, plumbing pipes, washing machine, ro membrane and dishwasher due to the hardness. We can help with any/all of that. Russ

200 mg/l sodium in city water

You can go with a small/low capacity point-of-use RO, or if you want to go whole house, then we typically spec appropriate pretreatment (often a carbon tank and a softener), followed by an RO that feeds an atmospheric (unpressurized) tank. Often we put a UV light on a recirculation loop on that...

200 mg/l sodium in city water

And the RO will remove the sodium.

200 mg/l sodium in city water

Without any doubt, feed the RO softened water. Hard water will scale (and plug) an RO membrane.

200 mg/l sodium in city water

In your case...yes, an RO is the way to go. Assuming your Ca and Mg number are ppm, then I believe you'll have about 279 ppm sodium in your softened water. An RO will take care of that.

    TDS meter recommendation?

We have the handheld TDS3 on sale, and the DM1 would also be worth taking a look at.

    RO system recommendation?

8 gals per hour (*24=) ~ 200 gpd. Given your tap water temperature is almost certainly below factory spec temperature (77F), and your pressure may also be below factory spec, 200 gpd is a lofty expectation for a residential scale (under the sink) system. But we have plenty of options to meet...

A tabletop softener? Nothing on the market that I'm aware of. There are some manual softeners but even then they are bigger than "tabletop."

Permeate pumps work only on systems equipped with a pressurized storage tank. I wonder if you're talking about a booster pump?

For context: a single 12 minute shower with a typical 2.5 gpm showerhead uses 30 gallons of water.

Good choice! The (now) DuPont Filmtec 75 is a good one - low testing pressure (50 psi) and high rejection (99%). Nothing matches it. The trick to getting a reasonable life span in the presence of high hardness is 1) softening the feedwater if possible, 2) or running it with a ~4:1 waste water...

Good. The issue though is system maintenance. Some of the kiosks are maintained, some... not so much. So you have to use your TDS meter every time you go.

Primo RO Water Refill at Walmart

In our experience talking with customers over the last ~25 yrs, the quality of water from kiosks is hit or miss. Bottom line is if that is where you get your water, take a handheld TDS meter with you to the kiosk. https://www.buckeyehydro.com/handheld-meters/

For the purposes of beer brewing, in most circumstances, yes, the water quality is the same.
