    Fist time kegging

I'm fairly new to kegging myself - I've found this process works best: 1. Rack beer into keg. 2. Put gas on at 30psi (do not shake the keg) 3. Leave on 30psi for about 24 hours, I often lower the temp at this time to about 36F. 4. Purge CO2 in keg. 5. Turn down PSI to about 6, and...

    Pros and Cons of BIAB

Cleaning the bag is easy for me, after the mash I dump the grain into a garbage bag. Once the bag cools off I shake it out over the garbage, then I throw it in the clothes washer, with no soap, on delicate. Comes out clean and takes very little effort!

    Favorite "Two Hop" IPA combinations.

I have an IPA carbing up in the keg right now that has a Cirta and Cascade combo. It smells and tastes amazing! The grain bill is very similar to yours - Marris Otter, Munich, Crystal, and Carapils. I also used 04 instead of 05 to get some more complexity.

Kegging my first tonight, check my process for accuracy

Hi, 1. If you want you can purge the keg a few times prior to filling it with beer, some people think it helps eliminate any oxygen during the filling process. 2. You can keep the gas hooked up during purging. What I do is close the release valve on my gas line when I pull the pressure...

    Wheat malt as base malt?

Sorry to go off topic a bit but,I have a somewhat random question regarding wheat beers. Is it normal to have a white Krausen when fermenting a wheat beer? I'm brewing a dunkelweizen and the Krausen is almost entirely white. Thanks!

How many gallons of homebrew in 2016?

3 gallons IPA, 3.5 gallons porter, 3 gallons IPA, 3.25 gallons dunkelweizen = 12.75 total in 2016 so far. 3173.25

    Ball-Lock Quick Disconnects: Exploded View

Yup, that graphic is the way I was re-assembling the disconnect and having issues with the valve fitting properly. Major kudos to Ace for posting the correct way!

    Ball-Lock Quick Disconnects: Exploded View

Just wanted to post an update - I went home at lunch and sure enough I was trying to put the valve in backwards. With the orientation corrected the disconnect is working perfectly again! Thanks!

    Ball-Lock Quick Disconnects: Exploded View

I've wondered if its worth taking it apart. I do just because I like to be very sure everything is clean and sanitized, but is it really necessary?

    Ball-Lock Quick Disconnects: Exploded View

Thanks, I'm going to double check the valve when I get home. I have a nagging feeling that I was putting it in the wrong way...

    Ball-Lock Quick Disconnects: Exploded View

Hello, I have recently got into kegging - this weekend I kegged my 3rd batch. Everything goes fairly smooth, but I've having a heck of an issue with my liquid disconnect. I can take it apart to clean it, but when I try to put it back together I can never get the valve to be straight...

    Taking Homebrew on a plane

I've not brought homebrew on a plane, but I did bring several bottles of wine a few years ago. I was a bit nervous so I told the baggage check in person that there was wine in my bags. They asked if it was packed well enough to survive and I explained my packaging. When I got to my...

    fermentation in glass carboy

I ferment in a modified cooler with the carboy in a water bath. The cooler has no lid so to protect the wort from light during fermentation I cover them with a large blanket. Also whenever I'm moving the carboy in or out of the cooler I turn off most of the lights to minimize the chances of...

Vissani mini fridge - replacing temp control

I just picked up an Inkbird controller myself, easy to use and works perfectly! Cannot recommend it enough!

What did I do to my first brew?

One thing that was not obvious to me when I started was the amount of water absorbed by the grains. I was ending up with less wort than I expected because I was not accounting for this water loss. Now I add about 0.09 extra gallons per pound of grains used. Much better results, hope this helps!

Need help to start this new brew!

Hi, the boil time on hops refers to when you add them during the boil - for example a 45min hop addition would be added when 45min are left in the boil. In other words you want the hop to boil for the amount of time given in the recipe. Hope that helps!

    Typical ABV?

I ended up with a "session" double IPA a few batches ago. I was shooting for a true double IPA but had some issues during the brew that had a huge impact to my efficiency. I missed the original gravity by a lot and the beer ended up at about 4.5%. That being said it is very tasty with a ton...

    Carboy vs bucket

The only issue you may run into is headspace - meaning that there will be a lot of extra space in the bucket. This is not an issue during fermentation as the CO2 pushes out all of the oxygen, but if you open the bucket after fermentation it will fill with oxygen which could add off flavors to...
