    Poor Secondary Choice...

Yeah, for plastic, the lower number is better. Really, for secondaries, typically you want to stick to PET or PETE, which I think is 1 or 2.

Marking your brewpot for volume! How do you do it?

<sarcasm> Wow, water expands by up to 4%, and the unwashed plebs without recent chemistry and/or physics instruction are chumps for being off in their measurements by as much as a quart on a 6 gallon boil. The horror. The horror. </sarcasm>

    Poor Secondary Choice...

I think those bottles are HDPE, which is oxygen-permeable and (therefore) may cause off flavors if left in the secondary for the length of time most meads require.

    Left Hand Milk Stout Clone

Uh, looks like the gravity readings on that recipe look a bit off, eh? Mine started at about 1.070+/- and finished around 1.022. The recipe didn't show a projected FG, and mine seemed high, but I hadn't worked with lactose, and since it is not fermentable, I figured it would render the FG high...

    Left Hand Milk Stout Clone

I'm drinking the Zymurgy clone as I type. Excellent.

How do brew pubs do it?

I worked at one in Nashville (very briefly), and they had serving tanks for their brews, basically giant kegs. They had lines running to each station from the serving tanks.

    Starbucks to experiment with beer?

Starbucks does have a "short" size. It's generally reserved for kids' drinks, but you can order a short drip coffee. It would be smaller than a tall.

    Bulk Grain Storage

I got a bin from the Container Store. It is air tight, holds 50+ pounds of grain, and sits on casters for easy moving. It's listed here for $25, but it was on sale for $19 when I picked it up. The Container Store > Pet Food Containers

Best response to telling someone you homebrew

"Do you brew dark beers or light beers?"

    Does my LHBS suck?

I lived in RIC until about a year ago, and that was my LHBS. He can be a jerk. I went in that place every week for a year spent hundreds upon hundreds of dollars there, and he never remembered me, always gave me that same grin you mention when I asked an oddball question or otherwise made me...

Losing weight and inches without giving up beer

Hook that bike up to a generator, plug in a heat stick, make beer while you pedal. Bet you lose more weight than the beer would add. It's a perfect solution.

    DFH Midas Touch

I love it. SWMBO loves it. DFH isn't distributed in MO, so I have to drive to IL to pick it up. Of course, that goes for 90 minute, Raison d'Etre, and everything else too. I hadn't had it since moving to MO until a few weeks ago. We used to drink it frequently. This latest 4 pack is much...

"This beer doesn't fit a style"- crazy beers

One of my earliest brews started as a Stone Ruination clone recipe. I used Trappist yeast and threw oak in the secondary. It may not be all that odd, but my ever so helpful and supportive LHBS guy rolled his eyes, and sighed disapprovingly, "Whatever." It was fan-friggin-tastic. After...

    Dark Heine's

I'm pretty sure I saw it last week. I didn't buy it. I didn't give it a second look. So, I may have made this up. Jury's still out.

    Lavender Mead

DC, I used 1/4 ounce (by weight) dried lavender in a 3 gallon batch. It turned out great. Love it.

Irish Red Ale St Fuad's Irish Red

I brewed this for our 4th Annual Crawfish Boil, and it was a huge hit! I highly recommend it!

Has this ever happened to you and am I a beer snob?

I was at a greasy spoon a couple of weeks ago. It's a real dive, but they had DFH 60 Minute on tap. I ordered a glass. It didn't look right, but I took a sip. Not what I ordered. I stopped the waitress and said I thought there'd been a mistake. She said, "Oh, did they give you PBR?" Yes, yes...

Can you add IBUs after fermentation?

I just did this a few weeks ago with a Saison that wouldn't dry out for anything. I boiled some hops for an hour in 1/2 gallon water, cooled the tea in an ice bath, poured it into the keg, and racked the beer on top. There was probably 1/4 gallon left after the hour boil, by the way. This...

    Crawlspace Aging with Plastic Buckets

I'm far from a mead expert, but I've bulk aged a couple of meads and one batch of wine in PET water bottles. I think PET or PETE are the only safe plastics for bulk aging.
