Brewery Build - Single Tier HERMS

01/04/10 Update: Gave our welder, Micah, the green light tonight after he received the pricing from the metal supplier. If all goes well we might have the stand in about a week! And we thought we had some time to order up remaining parts - guess we better get on it!

Anyone implement a tippy dump keggle?

Our design will have much the same idea as Bobby implemented. The Black Heart Brewery has it as well. Angle iron trays hinged and the keggles bolted to the trays. As Bobby notes, it won't be a perfect dump - because the kegs aren't the perfect pot for this stuff (they've got the upper skirt, a...

Brewery Build - Single Tier HERMS

Not as much as I'd have liked but kind of expected that with all of the obligations around the holidays. I've ordered quite a few of the parts - still waiting on a few things to come back in stock at suppliers. We've passed our design off to the welder and on Wednesday he sent the cut sheet off...

Best (inexpensive) Drill for Grain Mill - Harbor Freight?

Well there are several reasons not to go with a motor - 2 big ones are: 1) Pulley's for gearing - have to deal with getting that all setup correctly. 2) Requires you to have a fairly permanent "stand" or workbench setup For us - hoping to have some freedom to bring our equipment to different...

Best (inexpensive) Drill for Grain Mill - Harbor Freight?

Anyone had good luck with the 3/8" keyed chuck variable speed drill at Harbor Freight that runs $30 or so - for use with a grain mill (MM2)? Wasn't sure if it's got decent torque to get going (not stall out) or if I need to be looking at a slightly more expensive drill.

    Thermowell for Love controller?

Are you using the thermistor that comes with the controller? We'll be getting ours from Derrin (Brewers Hardware) - his are slightly larger and they should fit as I understand.

    Stainless cam lock fittings

Still hoping they'll get the 1/2" NPT Type F in... I've talked to them a bit about these, they are buna seals so should be fine for our use.

"polishing your keg" is more than a clever euphemism

Very valid point - bottom line be safe, be careful and take your time.

    Question about Towers??

If you are open to a little DIY - check out the link in my signature - I wasn't happy with the quality of the towers I saw pre-made so took a different route - much sturdier in my opinion. You might spend a few bucks more up front but you'll end up with a nice quality, with your choice of...

    Cheap Pull Boxes

Thanks - just a clarification this is galv. steel not SS. This is a pretty good price on a box this big though.

    Monster Mill MM2 or MM2-2.0?

I went ahead and ordered the MM2 and the hopper. Figured I'll probably not worry with conditioning and the 2" is probably no huge benefit. MM2 works just fine! Now we can finally purchase bulk grains!

    Monster Mill MM2 or MM2-2.0?

I've read up on conditioning a few times now. With such a small amount of water used in conditioning malt - is it smart to go with stainless rollers? Or is that $30 upgrade not worth it? In the Wiki it mentions it doesn't matter so figuring that's the case.

    Monster Mill MM2 or MM2-2.0?

Does the extra 1/2" on the MM2-2.0 really result in a better crush in anyway? I'm leaning more towards just the standard MM2 (not upgrading to a 1/2" shaft or SS). But after searching didn't see much discussion on the differences between these models. Any thoughts, opinions or suggestions in...

"polishing your keg" is more than a clever euphemism

Bummer - luckily I only did it on a 6" section. I still need to go back over it with the gator grit and polishing - will I still have rusting problems?

"polishing your keg" is more than a clever euphemism

Just a safety note: I picked up a few kegs with painted bands (thick paint) that I didn't want to waste a GatorGrit pad on so I took a 4 1/2" Metal Wire Brush for my angle grinder to the keg. This thing gave a lot more vibration than a GatorGrit did and my hand slipped part of the way through...

    2009 Christmas present thread

Wife got me all 4 seasons of Three Sheets and a Pleepleus (Swinger Ty Beany Baby). Also got a 6 gallon Better Bottle, the Designing Great Beers book, Brewmaster Game, smart strips for my kegs, heavyweight Carhartt hoody for walking the dog on the cold mornings, and some iTunes gift cards.

Did I get a bad bottle of Delirium Tremens?!?!

Haha - guess it's a Christmas thing - we cracked a bottle of Delirium Noel tonight - same experience with floaters. Got to say, I don't mind Belgians but ... not a fan of this one, talk about tasting alcoholy ok hard to express but was not a fan!
