    10 days primary | A couple questions | Pictures

next brew, just use some distilled water. It's a lot cheaper, and you don't have the chance of getting whiskey in a batch that you don't want whiskey in. That small an amount of whiskey wouldn't even come through in the flavor profile, but still...

Try hop pellets next time instead of the prehopped extract.

    Advice on recipe formulation

You could treat them to something with an island flavor. Pineapple Pale Ale, mango blonde ale, coconut porter, or if you're adventurous a Papaya wit. I might try the papaya brew myself, but use the seeds in the boil for spice and drop some of the fleshy fruit into the secondary.

    First All-Grain Brew

a mash tun and lauter tun are basically the same thing for a homebrewer, a cooler with a false bottom to separate the grain from the wort before the boil. A simple recipe for a pale would be 90% 2-row or pale malt and 10% crystal. I would recommend getting some brewing software so that you...

    That Friend

To answer your light bulb question, none. Thomas Edison was a giant **** bag who made a career out of stealing ideas from great minds, then using a huge financial backing to steal or undercut the patents. Your question should read, "How many filiments did Joseph Swan try before he made a light...

    Wort Chiller

No, if all the connections are secure, nothing running through the lines will ever touch the beer. Teflon tape isn't needed, but if it's already there, it won't hurt anything. You don't need to sanitize the chiller, just remember to drop that bad boy into the boil 10 min before flame out and...

    Wort Chiller

I would use as much of that 50' as you can get in the kettle. The time it takes to cool down is directly proportional to the surface area of your chiller line. Your tap water is probably cool enough to keep your chiller simple. Make sure to solder your hose connection; 1/4" tubing will build...

    Wort Chiller

Thanks man. It was around $80 total including some pipe benders; $10 for a tool to not put a kink in $40 worth of copper was well worth it. I spent awhile trying to figure out how to attach the tubing to the copper. I found some compression fittings that work like a charm, but they weren't...

    flavor addition

I forget the name of them, but there are tablets you can get and throw in the secondary with the fresh fruit to keep out any unwanted bacteria from your beer. Campden tablets, thanks google.

    flavor addition

Why go with extract? You could put fresh peaches directly in the secondary.

    Wort Chiller

Depends where you live. I have a coil that's hooked up to the hose and a coil that sits in the kettle. The coil that's hooked up to the hose sits in an ice bath and is around 20' of 3/8" tubing, the 30' of 3/8" tubing that sits in the kettle. Works really well during the 6-8 months out of the...

    Need quick advice!

1.030 is still pretty high. It's only been 4 days man, just close up the bucket and give it another 5-7 days. Check the gravity again. If it's still at 1.030 then either there's not much left but unfermentables or your yeast could be stalled. Either way, just relax. Your beer will be fine.

    Dixie Cup 2013

I thought the same thing. Then I went to the Foam Rangers page and the events page is under construction; most google results are articles from the 2009 cup. I'll just check with the guys at Defalcos next time I'm there and update this thread for anyone else who's interested in entering.

    Dixie Cup 2013

It's early, I know. Been brewing for about a year now, and a buddy and myself are going to start working on a few recipes for the upcoming Dixie Cup. Anyone have any pointers? Also, when is it this year? My son's 1st birthday is on Oct. 12th and I'm really hoping it's not that weekend.

    Bottles

Get as many bombers (22oz) as you can; bottling 48 - 12oz bottles is just a pain in the ass. Collecting bottles is a fun process; it gives you the opportunity to try a bunch of new beers. I wouldn't go the flip top route, but that's just me. I would loose at least 1 flip top per batch.

Can I rack to secondary before hitting FG?

Patience is a virtue when it comes to fermentation. I couldn't wait to get my first brew bottled; I've learned my lesson since then. Read resumeman's post and then read it again.
