I don't think I can afford a pipeline. I'm only doing extracts, so I can see how it would be cheaper with AG, but still kits run me $35-$50 maybe more depending on variety. If I did a batch of week I'd be broke and have way more beer than I could drink. I think ideally I'd like to brew the...

    Christmas Presents!

Booze-related gifts: Moose Drool brown ale clone, currently in its second week of fermentation. Chimay gift set, the chalice is what I was really after but the three bottles are nice. Three bottles of Iron Hill's Winter Wheat Wine... :drunk: Liquor store gift card for my other vice (good...

My basement is aound 62 degrees right now... too cool for fermenting?

So it's a week after pitching and the airlock is still. Should I now move it up to my 72 degree kitchen for the next few weeks or leave it be?

    Is the recipe a secret?!?

need an idea for 2nd brew

What kind of Hefe did you make, come from a kit? I'm doing a Moose Drool brown ale clone at the moment, my next will probably be a Fat Tire clone.

Best practices for washing bottles... how do you do it?

Good link - thanks for posting.

    Apfelwine yeast?

I just made apple cider and used Nottingham English yeast, which imparted a dry, beer-like quality and not much apple flavor. That and the fact that I didn't carb it made it vastly underwhelming, but it was my first go at homebrewing and nothing exploded or got infected so I considered it a...

    It's called homebrew not freebrew!

Ten page thread perfectly summed up in 12 words. :D I'm still a n00b, nobody bugs me until I prove I can make decent beer.

Starter question: less than 24 hours away from brewing...

It's not a high gravity beer, I guess my goal is just to wake them up and be ready for action so it appears as though I'll be fine - thanks for the info everybody.

Starter question: less than 24 hours away from brewing...

I was just gonna make a 1 liter starter and pitch the whole thing. I screwed up and got dark DME instead of light as suggested but 1 liter shouldn't change the SRM that much... I'm hoping.

Starter question: less than 24 hours away from brewing...

I'm brewing a brown ale tomorrow morning, if I make a starter when I get home from work that gives it only about 16 hours instead of 24... should I even bother with a starter if I don't have a full 24 hours to devote to it? I'm assuming it wouldn't hurt anything, just wouldn't give the yeast...

My basement is aound 62 degrees right now... too cool for fermenting?

It runs about 68 in the summertime. I guess I am fortunate, though it's a townhouse that I will only be for another year or so... then it's on to house hunting (with area for fermentation in mind) :D

    specialty grains (extract kit)

Ever since I ruined my first batch I'll be very cautious about steeping time and temps moving forward, I have a feeling my beer would have been quite tasty if not for that. Now I'm embarrassed to let anybody try it and I have over a case of gross beer to get rid of (can't bring myself to dump...

My basement is aound 62 degrees right now... too cool for fermenting?

Brown Ale, specifically a Moose Drool clone from Austin. I didn't think it was too cool since it warms up a bit in the fermenter, just wanted to make sure before I start the process. We just bought a metal rack that holds all my brewing equipment, it'll probably go on there.

My basement is aound 62 degrees right now... too cool for fermenting?

If so I'll need to come up with plan B quickly, my kit arrives today and I really don't have any other place to do it. The rest of the house stays around 72 degrees.

    specialty grains (extract kit)

Those might, mine said 60 minutes, which I see they've now changed on their website. I have the print out at home to prove it.

    specialty grains (extract kit)

What I don't get is why their instructions say to steep for an hour, then everywhere else I read online it says 30 minutes tops.

    specialty grains (extract kit)

For God's sake keep it well under 170, I steeped my first batch too hot and it got the infamous grainy/bitter/astringent off-flavor I was unaware of at the time. I also steeped for an hour per the instructions... carry on.

    2 year old extract kits

This is the response I got from Austin Homebrew supplies when I asked about how long a kit would stay good for: Everything included in a recipe kit can be stored in the refrigerator but since all items are perishable food items and contain no preservatives, it is best to brew as soon as...
