I wouldn't get hung up on all the nitrogen stuff. The first beer I made from extract was a dry stout. I didn't sour any beer and I didn't do anything with nitrogen, just bottle carbed it, and it turned out excellent. In fact I think I will go get one out of the fridge right now. :)
Last time I bottled I had 4 shots of tequila, watched an episode of "It's always sunny in philadelphia" to let it soak in, and then got to bottling. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. Took twice as long as normal but who cares? :D
Just brewed as follows:
5.5lb 2-row pale malt
2.0lb flaked corn
1.5lb minute rice
1oz. Sterling hops @ 60 minutes
Safale US-05 yeast
Mashed for 90 minutes at 151F. I batch sparged, one run for 90 minutes and then rinsed for 15 minutes with another 3.5 gallons of water.
started with 7.25...
I know you said no propane but this is what I'd go for:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/3/HouseHome/1/HeatingAirConditioning/PortableBaseboardHeaters/PRD~0522617P/25K%2BBTU%2BConvection%2BHeater.jsp
Maybe you don't have Canadian tire but I'm sure you could find something similar :D...
I have 4 or 5 of them and have corked them without issue. I was nervous but I just compared them to the other bottles and the opening was the same size and the glass seemed to be the same thickness.
I use TSP for cleaning and sodium metabisulfate for sanitizing. All came with my wine making equipment. You have to rinse the sodium metabisulfate off as good as you can, I always do, and have never had any problems (infections).
Lately the TSP has been cloudy as soon as I mix it. I...
I made a spreadsheet and tracked what I was spending my time doing.
Most people work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, and spend 8 hours per day sleeping.
That leaves 72 hours a week. What are you doing during that time? I'll bet you find that you're spending 3,4,5 hours each day on the...
I grew up in Grande Prairie. Lots and lots and lots of snow, and long -40ish weeks throughout the winter.
Edmonton isn't too bad. It gets bitterly cold once in awhile but it never lasts and there's never really too much snow. I don't mind, I do most or all of my snowboarding in northern...
Sure. The cooled wort sitting directly outside your IC forms a boundary layer - i.e. a temperature gradient in the surrounding wort which slows the cooling rate. When I used my IC I noticed this also - stirring the wort sped up the cooling immensely. This is why putting the brewpot in a tub...
Why would an alcoholic spend months poring over teeny little batches of beer with all kinds of temperature controls and hop timing and conditioning and sanitation when you could just fill a clean garbage can with water, dump in 20 pounds of tang juice crystals and a few packets of wine yeast...
I just use regular old tap water for wine and beer making. I don't boil it first. I've made enough wine and know enough experienced people that have been doing it for years that just use regular tap water that it seems like a non-issue. My sanitation paranoia kicks in with equipment that I...
Bottled my first batch in 2L coca-cola bottles. Just pour the thing in a pitcher ( in one pour as mentioned) and you're good to go. And if you're by yourself make sure you put your car keys away :p
I'm from Edmonton too, best place to go in town is Winning Wines Plus in the Lendrum Shopping Centre (111 st & 57 ave). Nice guys, good selection for everything (kits, extract, grain, yeast, hops), and they'll lend you a grain mill.
:mug:
I made one with 30ft of tubing that cost me $12. Not a great length of tubing but it cooled a 5 gallon batch from boiling to 70 in about 10 minutes. Good enough for me. I bought a submersible fountain pump from home depot and just used vinyl tubing to connect to the copper on each end, one...
I thought maybe it had something to do with the water. It hasn't happened to me before but now it's winter... so maybe they've changed the water somehow.
Also, in case anyone ever searches this... for sanitizing I use sodium metabisulphate (a rinse off sanitizer that is sold at most wine...
Hey,
I clean all my equipment and wine bottles with the pink chlorinated trisodium phosphate cleaner.
Anyway the deal is you soak them for 20 minutes. After I did this all the bottles had a cloudy white powderish residue on them. Any idea why this might happen? I haven't had this...
I have mixed feelings about it. I mean farmers making moonshine used to use old tractor radiators as a still. Compared to that an orange pail is like nothing.
On the other hand unregulated plastics tend to leach chemicals into water and none of said chemicals are going to help you in the...
