Best Kettle for the Money (10-15 gal size)

Concord does make a cheap kettle but do be aware they are not 304 stainless steel so when comparing to Blichmann, Spike and SS know they are not apples to apples. (see HERE) All the above mentioned kettles also have a bunch of great accessories which will greatly help you during brewing.

    SsBrewTech Whirlpool Demo (Video)

Have you done a brew with the new whirlpool? I bought a whirlpool fitting for my SS kettle and was underwhelmed. I got a lot of hop material into the fermenter after a 15min whirlpool. I think the fitting does a good job of creating the whirlpool but the trub dam thing doesn't really do...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

I'm not trying to argue but I don't think you're listing to me. There is a large difference between 201 and 304. 201 has a higher tendency to pit. I don't need to tell you why pitting would not be good on the cold (fermentation) side of brewing. 201 (like the Champan eq) or the Concord crap SS...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

I say this because a ton of people have Concord pots (or CO Brewing, Ruby, etc) and I'd say 99.9% of them believe they are getting 304SS. It hurts companies like SS, Spike and Blichmann that are actually innovating new products. It undercuts them by advertising a product that is 'the same' at a...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

Ummm I don't own Blichmann eq :confused: You're missing the point. Concord lies and deceives consumers. CO Brewing, Ruby Street and others use Concord pots. They probably don't know they are selling fake 300 series eq. This negatively effects the whole community. But sure let's just...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

Any facts to back this up? This thread is about 'cheap Chinese' stainless as in the fake stainless Concord is trying to push. What makes 304 is the elements and %'s that it's made with. 304 stainless is 304 stainless if it's made in the US, China or Mars. 'Cheap Chinese' SS is cheap because...

Other than the fact that Concord lists their kettles using the 18/8 and 18/10 distinctions....

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

Not really. It's kind of like the bourbon and whiskey analogy; all bourbon is whiskey but not all whiskey is bourbon. 304 has a minimum of 8% nickel. 316 has a minimum of 10% nickel. The extra nickel gives extra corrosion resistance. 316 also has 2% molybdenum which also increases the...

Can you snap some pics of the welds? I'm interested to see them? Were they back purged? It is a higher grade of 304; it has extra nickel for better corrosion resistance.

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

This is how misinformation gets started. Someone Googles something, goes to the first link and now they are an expert. Looked at the AK Steel company you referenced. They use UNS alloy classifications and right on their website 316 is listed as 10% minimum Nickel. Can you please stop and...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

I've seen you make this comment before. Do you think all Spike, Blichmann and SS do is slap their name on a Chinese kettle? Each kettle from those suppliers is completely different and engineered; not just slapping a label on them. Suggesting so is a injustice to the engineering and innovation...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

304 has a minimum of 8% nickel 316 has a minimum of 10% nickel I know the 18/8 & 18/10 are out dated designations but 18/10 refers to 316. It's not being sensitive. It's being factual. Blichmann, Spike and SS were all classified as 304SS. The Concord didn't even register as a standard...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

Ummmm yes it is  Do you have anything to back up that claim? Do you work in an industrial setting that involves SS manufacturing? What do you think drill bits and punches and stamping eq is made from? Steel. I've tested my old Blichmann kettle at work with our XRF and it was...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

They advertise 18/8 and 18/10 which is 304 and 316 stainless. My personal take is most Concord kettle buyers are going off price alone. If some rust pops up it's not a big issue and it might not ever be brought up. The "well it cost 1/3 the price of a Blichmann so whatever" mentality comes...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

I'd be willing to bet A LOT of money it's company wide. If they list one kettle that is not even close to 304 stainless as such then it's safe to say that all their products are the same. Especially when they use a material that is meant to deceive.
  18. Sconnie12

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

It matters a lot as it has almost no nickel and not nearly enough chromium. What is really discouraging is they add a ton of manganese to form the austenitic grain structure i.e. so the kettles are not magnetic. That's done to fool consumers to think they are non-magnetic 304 SS when in real...

FYI : concord kettles are not 18/8 stainless

Yup I have run across the same thing at work. It's far less than a 201 material. I had a Concord kettle and it rusts like crazy! https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showpost.php?p=7341435&postcount=16 It's a shame too as a lot of other suppliers like CO Brewing and Ruby Street all use Concord equipment.

60 grit flap disc for an angle grinder should do the trick. Do you have an angle grinder? If not let me know what you got and I'll try to give a recommendation.
