What to do with these kits?

Pommy, I've scored some similar, just go check out the local Countdown, Foodtown or Woolworths. It would appear that they're going to only stock the Coopers homebrew (I guess that's what you get when they're an aussie company!). And so they've been clearing the Lion, Brewtec and Geordie (all NZ...

    Black Rock cider kit

Hey dude, I think it'll probably go to about 5%. If you want to boost it, perhaps substitute some of the water with bottled juice. Just make sure it's got no preservatives. I probably wouldn't stress too much about it thinning though, cider tends to be a bit that way anyway..... BTW, your...

    Chinese conicals

I'm not sure how the guy that does them does it. I guess he just builds from scratch. I just saw the details on a local homebrew website. Sweet about heading down, I'm sure you'll love it, we've got some pretty sweet riding roads here, as long as a local doesn't crash into you! Look feel...

    Chinese conicals

Cheers for all of the feedback, as it turns out, there's a guy who makes them locally that are quite well regarded, and they're going to figure out cheaper than the Chinese ones too, as is frequently the case when you live at the bottom of the world. Synovia, you're right on, I've seen it...

More malt extract = more hops?

Hey, I did a Black Rock IPA, and added an extra can of unhopped light malt, then after initial fermentation was over added 60g of hops (just the Brewcraft "teabag" ones). I haven't bottled it yet, and I tasted a sample the other night and it was definitely not bitter enough for me. Give I was...

    Chinese conicals

So, I've found a source in China for conical fermenters, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience. There's not much around here in NZ, and I'm kinda interested in importing and hopefully selling a few. Not as an on-going business (I don't think there'd be enough on-going demand in a nation...

How old were you when you started to homebrew?

    Are My Bottles Too Damaged??

Hi there, and welcome from a fellow kiwi! Those bottles will be sweet as (I assume you mean ABC Swappa Crates?). What you're seeing is wear marks from the bottles being reused so many times. I'd love to know how old some of the bottles out there in circulation are. They're thick and strong...

    First time cider

I had a taste of the "Fresh-Up" cider today, it was all good. Definitely the way I'll go in the future. More expensive than kits though.

    First time cider

I did a Black Rock kit, but I chucked a whole lotta extra White Chelsea in there, (About 3kg I think). Came out OK, but took ages to finish, about 6 weeks. Then I split it up, bottled some and secondaried the rest with raspberries, sultanas, spices and vanilla (5 different batches). Came out...

    Flying blind on a Hefeweizen

Have a look at realbeer.co.nz there you can order from the Wyeast range. They're done as indent orders so they take a while to arrive, and at the pricing you'll be wanting to wash and reuse or ranch your yeast. But it is an option for you, if you like.

    A keggle is conceived!

Yeeee har! Scored a keg from a friend in the weekend, now just got to get to work on it! Full boils here I come! :ban: Sorry, just had to get that out there, I'm a bit excited. Got my 7th "can and kilo" kit into the fermenter in the weekend, and am looking forward to the world of options...

What causes harder or softer hangovers?

I find it's water, water, water all the way. If I don't drink plenty of water then I feel like death the next day. I try to go for a 1:1 water:alcoholic drink ratio. Means you spend a whole lotta time going to and from the bathroon though!

    Glassware

I've got a some pilsners, one of those German cylindrical styled ones, some Leffe chalices, some stumpy conical Hoegaarden ones and a few stemmed tulips. The only difference I tend to notice is the aroma from the tulips (and to a smaller degree the goblets). Taste really doesn't seem to be effected.

    Strong dark wheat beer

SMOKEU, I reckon just do it. It'll still be beer, you'll still be able to drink it, and if it's not as good as you'd hoped you can try to change the recipe for next time. I'm rapidly discovering that experimentation is the go in homebrewing! To my (very inexperienced) eye that looks OK for a kit...

Finally found a place to buy USA beers!

Cheers for the posts guys! Really the only US beers available here easily are MGD and Bud..... and they're somewhat..... well, insipid. I'm stoked with the choices they've got. I'll definitely have to go through all of your suggestions and check them out!

Finally found a place to buy USA beers!

After a lot of looking, I've found a site that I can buy US beers here in NZ! At last I can taste some of the beers that get talked about here and other places. New Belgium, Dogfish Head, Sierra Nevada, Samuel Adams! Looks like the credit card is about to take a pounding! Not just US beers...
