    Sam Calagione presents "Brewed"

Cool, I don't think the show will be aired in the states till next year. He must be coming here in the next couple of weeks, Beervana is on the 27th and 28th of August and he's here for that. As for beer culture in NZ, it's still dominated by the macros, but craft beer is really starting to...

    Sleepwalking...

My dad apparently stripped his bed and put all of the blankets and sheets into the oven once when he was a kid, just as well he didn't turn it on! I've had a couple of minor ones, but it's usually just involved me getting up, moving somewhere in the house and then coming to my senses feeling...

    Sam Calagione presents "Brewed"

So, has anyone heard about this? I got wind of it from a local beer blog, looks like Sam is coming to NZ, where he's going to be a guest judge at Beervana-NZ's biggest beer festival and beer awards. Epic, a prominent NZ craft beer is going to be featured in the programme, and I believe a...

    Apple and Blackcurrant

I'm guessing it was the tannins that have made it taste bad (sort of a dry puckering taste?). Perhaps the freezing option may work (mix with lemonade or something? But perhaps like a bold wine a few years ageing may help the tannins mellow? I say biff a couple of bottles somewhere coold for a...

    Anyone ever drink Kava?

Right, so I'm back. Vanuatu is a pretty interesting place, and my wife and I had a great time. I only had Kava once there, I had 3 shells (coconut shells used as cups), before dinner one night. It certainly has more power than Fiji kava, I had a good subtle sense of everything being alright...

    Hello From New Zealand

I live in Papakura, and hell yeah, the week before last was frosty as! Made it worse that I'd just come back from Vanuatu! Don't stress too much about the time it's taking to start, it can sometimes take a couple of days. Do a hydro test in the weekend if you still haven't seen any action. Is...

    Hello From New Zealand

Hi Glenn, welcome! I put my fermenter in a old (no longer working) freezer, and I have a cut-down electric blanket I use to keep it warm. However, I susally leave it on at night and off during the day. I haven't done any brewing over the last couple of months and now it's getting (slightly)...

    Apple and Blackcurrant

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea, but unfortunately I just don't have the refridgeration space to accomplish that.

    Apple and Blackcurrant

I usually just let my cider ferment completely then bottle with priming sugar so it's a dry, sparkling cider. However I have experimented with artificial sweetner, but haven't got that quite right yet.

    Apple and Blackcurrant

I've done apple and blackcurrant cider, just using bottled juice. I used 18 litres of apple and 6 litres of apple and blackcurrant (I think the apple and black currant was about 5% currant). I did it with a wine yeast (can't remember which now) and didn't add any sugar or anything. It's pretty...

Curious... Who here hunts, fishes, gardens, preserving, gathers etc?

I dive for scallops and lobster, and also spearfish. Unfortunately not as often as I would like, and given the water temperature here it's usually only around summer.

    The World Cup Approacheth

:( NZ out. Oh well, at least we didn't lose a single game. And besides, if we'd gone through we would've just got spanked by the Dutch! I'm going to be tired today, getting up at 2am to watch a game is not conducent to resreshing sleep. Bring on the coffee!

    What Book(s) Are You Reading?

I'm just finishing off "Kingdom of Fear" by Hunter S Thompson, bought it at the airport a couple of months ago when traveling for work. Off on my honeymoon next week, so will be reading a couple of Lee Child books then.
