    ingredients on hand

Yeah, I had 3 messages and it's full. :D I'll punch it in when I get home. But honestly, there are only a few (balanced) ways to go with that list of ingredients. I just made some guesses about amounts and got the following, which coincidentally meets all the numerical requirements for an...

    Mac Software?

They all work on my computer. I'm sorry you are having trouble with some of them. Generally, I agree. I feel the same way about Pro Mash, which hasn't been updated since early 2003. I probably wouldn't have listed Brewsta if someone asking about Windows software, given that there are far more...

    What software is recommended?

There are three or four threads here on the first page of this subforum that are nearly the same. Check out a few of those, and if you still have questions, feel free to ask. :) But yes, BeerSmith has a recipe editor.

Sure. Shoot me a PM with the list. I've never used this feature, so this will be a good way to give it a test run.

Is Beersmith the best software for custom recipes?

It's always just a guide with any software since it's nearly impossible to hit everything 100%. I just would prefer to be able to have more control over the infusion parameters. Maybe I'm just not using it right, but I spent quite a few hours wrestling with it. I usually move on if something is...

    NYC Apartment Brewing Challenges

Nice! We lived on Kissel Ave. There are like three of them, but we lived on the one between Castleton Ave and Forest Ave (half a block from St. Vincent's). Our house was a massive two-family home. Our side alone was about 2500 sq ft. And there was a detached garage, but the landlord...

Is Beersmith the best software for custom recipes?

I don't care for how Beer Alchemy handles the mash. I feel like for any given recipe, I'm locked into a mash "preset", instead of tweaking the mash for each recipe. I tend to run with a similar mash schedule each time, but the temp and volume of each step differs from recipe to recipe. Beer...

    NYC Apartment Brewing Challenges

Funny. I grew up in coastal NC and went to school in Raleigh (NC State). Then I moved to Staten Island and worked in Manhattan for about 5 years. Now I've been out in Jersey for about 5 years. I've liked all the places I've lived, but I'd have trouble living in NC again because of cultural...

To the OP, we did a show on "urban brewing" on Final Gravity Podcast: Check out Episode 11.5: http://www.finalgravitypodcast.com/archives.htm Amen. I used to live in Staten Island (West Brighton), and the house I lived in was massive. I had a full-sized basement that I used for most of my...

Is Beersmith the best software for custom recipes?

BeerSmith runs fine with CrossOver Office on Linux, and it also works okay with Wine. It occasionally randomly crashes, but it's not a big deal. I also can run it on CrossOver on OS X. There, now I'm on topic...so I can say this: Hardware-wise, most Apple stuff is a bit slower than the rest...

Is Beersmith the best software for custom recipes?

You can try Beer Tools Pro, Beer Alchemy, or BrewTarget. All run natively on OS X. BrewTarget is free.

Year old crushed grain, mashed for test batch, throw away?

I've brewed with really old grain (2 years old, not crushed) and super-old hops (like 4 years old, literally). It still makes great beer. I think the key is to keep the grains in a cool, dark place and do your best to keep it sealed up. Hops go in the freezer (I've had good luck with...

Brewtarget 1.2.2 - Free Open Source Brewing Software

Yes, it does. It has visual graph of how full your mash tun is getting when you are designing the mash. I'd suggest filling up the mash tun so that the water is level with the top of the false bottom and that's your "grain displacement" figure. That's not a scientific approach, but I think...

    Brew Software

I'd suggest using something that runs on both Windows and OS X. You *could* pay for two versions of Beer Tools Pro, which is great software, or you could just get BrewTarget, which is free and runs on Windows, OS X, and Linux...and it's also great software.
