Switching from glass carboy to Stainless Fermenter for < $50

I tried using a ratchet tie down but I could not get enough downward pressure spread evenly across the entire lid to seal it. I even tried putting blocks of wood on the lid, under the tie down. Nope. Did not work. The clips take about 30 seconds to put on and remove. It's not pretty, but...

Switching from glass carboy to Stainless Fermenter for < $50

I went down that route of an o-ring. I originally tried the o-ring from a bucket lid, but it was a bit too small, so I bought one. Since it is round it rolls off the lid very easily. Even when I managed to get it to stay, it still leaked. Plus I know the silicon tubing is food safe, easy...

Switching from glass carboy to Stainless Fermenter for < $50

While the debate rages on about plastic buckets vs glass carboys vs stainless fermenters, I made the switch to stainless for less than $50 after I had an "event". I've used 6.5 gallon glass carboys for the last 6+ years. I loved how they don't take on flavors or smells a plastic bucket will...

Wet Towel + Hot Kettle = Faster Cooling?

Update. I brewed two batches this weekend to test the evaporative cooling theory. While not the caliber of an xBmt (love this site http://brulosophy.com/exbeeriments/) I do think it is an interesting result. Both batches had the same volume of wort at flame out (6.25 gallons). Both batches...

Wet Towel + Hot Kettle = Faster Cooling?

Right now my stainless I.C. is taking about 37 minutes to bring me down to 68* F. Even if I can shave 10 minutes off that time, I'd be happy. Good idea for the tee shirt. It will be less likely to act as an insulator. ~HopSing.

Wet Towel + Hot Kettle = Faster Cooling?

Thanks for the input. I was planning to keep the towel wet with a pitcher of ice water and perhaps a fan blowing on it. I'm assuming as long as the towel stays wet and the air temp is lower than the wort temp, I should gain something, no? Sounds like I might need to make 2 batches this...

Wet Towel + Hot Kettle = Faster Cooling?

Does anyone wrap their brew kettle with a wet towel after flame out to take advantage of evaporative cooling? Seems like it would work in principle and help the immersion chiller bring down the wort to pitching temp quicker. I'm planning a brew session this weekend and thought of giving it...

    oktoberfest

I'm thinking of picking up Brewers Best Oktoberfest kit. Is this the one you're using? Has anyone tried this kit from Brewers Best?? I just bottled my second Brewers Best kit - English Pale Ale (first was an English Brown Ale, which is very tastey) so I'm in need of getting the primary...
