    No-Chill Brewing?

He just means that the refrigerator compressor would be running constantly for a long time (hours) to cool the beer from boiling temps to yeast pitching temps. I would, at least, just let it sit outside the refrigerator to cool down to closer to room temperatures before you put the refrigerator...

Brew kettle cart and "grain crane"

Anything to save your back is a good idea. It is hard to tell from the pictures how sturdy it is. It does make the whole kettle more top heavy. I would have probably just gone all the way to the floor with the upright boards and made a sturdy floor bracket so it isn't supported by the kettle...

    No-Chill Brewing?

I don't quite understand that part. It doesn't need to take 4 hours to chill. I can chill to 65-70 degrees in 20-25 min with my IC, a couple blocks of ice that I threw in the freezer beforehand and a cheap pump. I did it yesterday in the middle of a Wisconsin winter as long as I keep the hose...

    Dry hop disaster?

I would definitely just let it go. It should be fine. It took me a couple tries to figure out the magnet technique that works well for me. I first boil and then sanitize my hop bags and then fill them with my dry hops along with 2 bigger Sous Vide magnets inside the bag (one on each end of...

    Shorten the boil?

I doubt that you would notice any difference with somewhat shorter mash times and boil times with modern malts. This is an interesting perspective in this video.

I can finally dry hop successfully.

Interesting device that should work well. The problem is that it is a $150 dry hop solution for a $70 fermenter (at least for the Fermzilla All Rounder that I use). It also doesn't allow you to get the hops out of the beer after the dry hopping interval. Of course, it is also one more device...

    Flat beer

With Christmas coming up, this would all be a moot point if you asked Santa for a keg (hint hint).

When exactly to take OG reading

After a couple years of brewing and getting my processes down, I often don't even bother anymore to take gravity readings. It is just one more step that almost never changes what I do. It ends up being more just out of curiosity than a step that helps my beer (and something else to clean).

How many of you guys aerate with an oxygen tank?

I remember reading one study where they compared pure oxygen infusion vs aquarium pumps. As I recall it took the aquarium pump about 15 min to achieve the same wort oxygen content as 1 min of oxygen infusion. I wouldn’t spend a lot on oxygen but I can usually buy the small oxygen canisters for...

How many of you guys aerate with an oxygen tank?

The small disposable tanks work well and last several brews if you use them right. I just turn the regulator on to the minimal amount to get oxygen to flow and then remove them from the canister when not in use to prevent leaks. If you can find them, they are a cheap way to provide the yeast...

IPA stuck fermentation ==> hefeweizen starter added ==> ruined?

I have brewed that same beer and it was very good. I used the White Labs WLP644 yeast and it fermented fast. I did not check gravities during fermentation (never do) and just let it sit for 2 weeks before I kegged it. I did use a yeast starter with this liquid yeast. I wonder if your readings...

    CO2 Shortage & Capture

It is amazing how much CO2 is released during fermentation (just begging to be used). I do pressure fermentations with my Fermzilla All Rounder and attach my spunding valve usually set to about 12 psi. I attach my 5 gal keg filled with sanitizer the next morning when fermentation is pretty...

    PH meter

I use this Milwaukee ph meter. It is very accurate with proper calibration and also has temperature control which is great when brewing for a little over $120. https://milwaukeeinstruments.com/milwaukee-MW102-pro-ph-meter-with-temperature-probe/

    Saving My Back

I clean and sanitize the valve on my boiling kettle but I don't even use the valve anymore because it doesn't work well. The valve is usually not at the level where I want to pull off the clearest wort into my fermenter. It also occasionally get plugged up with trub. I would much rather use a...

In desperate need of help choosing a ball valve & thermometer combo.

I paid extra for my boiling kettle to get one with a good valve. That was a waste of money. I never use it. When I transfer beer to my fermenter, I don’t necessarily want it to come from the specific area of the valve because that may be where the most trub is. Instead I use a high quality...

Flying internationally with a full corny keg?

It is now official. Every conceivable question has now been asked on Homebrew Talk. LOL

Oxidized batch in 2 days with closed transfer.

I started using the Sous Vide magnets to dry hop and it works pretty well and not that much of a PITA. That being said, I don't think a beer will be terrible in 2 days from oxidation if the only thing you did was open the lid for a couple seconds. That doesn't sound right to me. As long as...

What are your tips for keeping costs down

I remember asking this exact same question once when I was younger about one of my other hobbies (fly fishing as I recall). I remember the guy telling me to improve myself so I didn't have to ask this question about my hobbies. Maybe that is the best answer of all although that is a whole...

Best Way to Learn Advanced Brewing?

Everyone has their own style of learning that works best for them. I started brewing the same way I would have approached a college course. I got the 2-3 best books (starting with John Palmers) and studied them thoroughly taking extensive notes. Then I very carefully put together a flowchart...

Induction burner (220v) vs propane with Brewers Edge Brewkettle (overhang)

I don't think I get 5 batches with a standard propane tank, probably more like 3 batches. Some of this depends on how long you want to spend brewing every brew day. I crank up my burner as high as possible to try to get done in a reasonable time. This might cut my brew times by 30-50%. I...
