Wort still to hot to add yeast.

Made my first batch tonight. Not going well. Have it in the fermenter but haven't added yeast. When I added top off water to make 5 gallons (partial boil) it warmed the wort too much. Went up to almost 90 degrees. An hour later it's now about 80 degrees. Is it safe to add the yeast yet...

    First ever brew this weekend.

First brew complete. Right now it's sitting outside cooling. Down to about 110 degrees. Have to get to 70 before I transfer to fermenter and pitch the yeast. I've got to get some money together to get some 22oz bottles for bottling day in about a week. I'll post some pics later when I'm done...

Please confirm the obvious about kegging.

I don't drink and drive. My wife is pregnant. ;)

Please confirm the obvious about kegging.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I need to gather kegging stuff soon. I only drink at home and only by myself, so I think kegging is the way to go. I can always bottle a six pack or so for new recipes to have my co-worker (and brewmaster at the local brewpub) try some. Also that chart is...

Please confirm the obvious about kegging.

I've searched on this forum and one other without finding this spelled out for me, so I'm asking for confirmation. If one is kegging the basic outline is: 1. Ferment the wort 2. Put into the keg 3. Carbonate via CO2 4. Chill beer to serving temperature and enjoy With kegging, no...

    Subcontractor questions

Always get agreements in writing. This is the contract part of being a subcontractor. You will most likely not be covered under their insurance policy, since WC covers only employees, not subs. Be sure to take 15.3% out for Self Employment tax (Medicare/Soc. Sec). For payroll employees, the...

How much to pay for CO2

Free is best. When I get into kegging (sooner than later), my step father is an operations manager for a welding supply company in Green Bay (WI). I get a hefty discount (employee discount is 50%) on welding equipment and get tanks filled for free when I visit. I call him with what I need, he...

    What are you drinking now?

I've got two Leinenkugel brews. Trying a 6 pack of the Sunset Wheat. Not sure I like it. Great flavor and feel for the first second after swallowing. After about 1 second after swallow, I get raped in the mouth with sweet flavor that I don't like one bit. Too sweet. It totally ruins the...

Do you focus on a style?

So many people talk about IPA I think I have to brew one down the road.

Do you focus on a style?

Just thinking about the beer I want to brew this weekend. It's going to be a wheat beer. I love wheat beer. Lager is OK. BCM is lame. I like classic German beer. I'm of German heritage (traced lineage back to the 1520s). Do you home brew to just make one style that you like or do you mix it up?

    Correct term for female brewer?

Brewer and brewmaster are not gender specific. We shouldn't have to invent words to pacify their insecurities of being a woman. Some men have a "SWMBO". I have a wife.

    First ever brew this weekend.

Did some more thinking while at work last night. Called the local HBS to check if they had a Brewer's Best "Weizenbier" kit in stock. Yup, one left. They are going to hold it for me until Friday when I can make it down there. My plan is to make that kit first, since it's listed as an "easy"...

Brewtarget 1.2 - Free open source brewing software

Have a Mac Mini with 10.6.6 and Qt downloaded. Didn't run. Got the same error message I got before installing Qt. Oh, well.

That's what I figured. I'll get some from the local HBS.

    First ever brew this weekend.

Hmm, interesting. We've got plenty of snow to go around.:) Thanks. Fermenting at 50 degrees is no problem as that's the basement temperature. Lagering below that is probably out of my equipment. Too cold outside and too warm in the basement. I could probably do 60 degrees in the basement...

    First ever brew this weekend.

Thanks for the advice. The recipe calls for a 2.5 gallon boil, then topped off to 5 gallons (says to add cool water up to 5 gallons by way of hydrometer reading not to exceed the spec). Home Beermaking (by William Moore) states a 5 gallon is minimum and that's what I figured would work with...

    First ever brew this weekend.

Been busy with a ton of other stuff in life, both good and bad. Finally getting around to brewing that Brewer's Best kit I got a year ago for a present. Supposed to be the Continental Pilsner. Going to create this thread as a journal for my first brewing. Here's the equipment I have: Two...
