Best tip when making the switch to all-grain

This may be outside the box but the best thing you can do is brew with someone or talk to someone who has done it before. If you cant brew with someone. Try calling someone who is willing to help you. There are plenty of us, including me. Just let someone know.

    Keggles

If I buy a ferrari for $20 grand and its stolen I give it back and lose my money. If Budweiser wants a keg back with a hole cut in the top ill give it back. It wont be stolen scince I paid Budweiser for a deposit on MY keg. You can buy a keg and if anything happens, you already paid your...

    Keggles

Ok sorry to the op this has gotten out of hand but, Stealing a car and PAYING for a deposit on a keg is different. I have been through these debates before. The company is willing to take a loss of a keg for a deposit otherwise it wouldnt have one. The company is saying this keg is worth $35...

    Keggles

I have read the debates on this, I get what your saying. I dont know the law, I am just a consumer, if he wants to sell me great kegs like new, im buying them. Not my problem. I look at it like its just a bigger bottle with a bigger deposit on it. Does harpoon still own my bottles? Maybe ill...

    Keggles

Im not paying him anything. There is a $35 deposit on them and he told me I can buy as many as I want. Dont see the big deal.

    Keggles

I would check a local big liquor store. I called mine down the street and the manager said he would charge me $35 a piece all day long for as many as i want. And he said a lot of them are brand new. He told me to come down and pick out the ones I want.

    Evaluating my process

I agree as long as you reach FG. I find it hard to think that 5 days after you brew you would be taking a gravity reading, skipping the next day then taking another reading 7 days after brewing to confirm FG. I still get airlock activity a week and a half after brew day. I usually have a...

building a 10 gallon cooler mash tun

I use a $7 braid with a 3/8 plug in the "crimped" end to keep it down. I also ran a piece of tubing with holes drilled in it up inside the braid. I fly sparge with no problems. I have done grain bills as big as 18lbs in my 10gal cooler. Last mash came out at 86% efficiency. Couldnt be happier...

    Evaluating my process

IMO you kegged to soon. Fermentation was probably still going on while you kegged it. I would have kept it untouched in primary for at least 2 weeks then dryhop in secondary for a week then keg/carb. I wouldnt be surprised if your fg is higher and your beer is sweeter then you wanted. Just my...

General All-Grain Setup and Equipment Question

Lot of good info here, just want to say.... I do full boils, 5gal AG batches on my stove using a 8gal kettle. I use a 10gal mash tun cooler, and my last brew was a 18lb grain bill. 70% efficiency. I mashed in with about 5.8gal I think 2.2 got absorbed. I got 3.6 for a first runoff then fly...

Moving to all grain - equipment check

Congrats on your decision. I was doing full boil 5gal batches, made the same mash tun for $60 and thats all I needed. You need to make sure you have someway to heat up your sparge water. A second pot is needed. But the only thing I could think of that you might need is your own grain mill. You...

    Racking to secondary

That was my first kit too. I had mine in primary for 2 weeks, secondary for a week then bottled for 2 weeks. Came out pretty good. I would make it again but Im not really doing extract anymore. Great kit though, you will enjoy it.

How much homebrew do you currently have in bottles/keg?

I got 8 cases in the basement along with 20 gal fermenting. I got 14lbs of grain ready for tomorrow's brew. And 2 more brew days in about a week.

    Brew pot??

I use a 8gal aluminum kettle. Its great, just be carefull of cleansers that leave a film behind and try not to scratch it. I just clean mine with hot water and paper towels.

    Time to bottle?

Sounds like its ready. What was the OG and I would take 1 more reading. I usually take a reading then skip a day then take another reading. If its the same and its been fermenting for 3 weeks, I bottle it. Let us know if u have any questions when bottling.

    did I overpitch?

Dont stop fermentation, let it go till its done. And after its done it needs to "clean up" so let it be for at least 14 days then rack to secondary and dry hop for about 7 days. P.S. you want at least 320 bil yeast cells for a 1.090 wort. So dont worry about over pitching 2 packs of dry yeast.
  17. lespaul23

    How much are you packaging???

Try shooting for 5.25gal post boil. That should give you enough for 2 full cases. I usually boil 6.5gal and get left with 5.2-5.5gal and I get 2 full cases plus a 6er.

    brew kit

Hi and welcome. I searched around for price, quality and components. I ended up with the northern brewer deluxe kit. You will have to get a couple of small things like a hydrometer and I forget what else I got but the kit comes with pretty much everything you need. If you have the money I would...

25' immersion chiller for 10gal batch

Thanks guys, for now I might stick with my chiller and will maybe get another 25'er or buy the 50' or maybe a plate chiller. Ive got some time, I wont be brewing outside till the winters over anyway. Thanks for all the input. I will consider all recommendations.

25' immersion chiller for 10gal batch

I was thinking that..... I would just need to connect the two of them together and id be all set. But.... coughing up money for another one right now might not be doable since im thinking about grabbing 2 1/2bbl kegs for MT and BK and a burner. If I can get by for a while with what I got i...
