The new brewer. A cautionary tale.

I also like a higher alcohol beer so no problems with going that route as long as you are using quality ingredients to get there. If you bought a kit then your fine. I brewed dozens of kits before I started to write my own recipes. Can't say I found one that produced a 7+% beer! Glad you didn't...

The new brewer. A cautionary tale.

Sounds like your doing the right thing. Simple Adjunct additions are not the main culprit. Nothing wrong with high gravity or an additional flavor. My advice is just don't get so overly concerned with them that you fail to Lear the art of the brew. I make a porter on the regular and often make a...

The new brewer. A cautionary tale.

I am a fairly new member to HBT but am amazed by the beginning brewer forum. I wished I would have known about it when I started brewing 8 years ago. I truly enjoy reading the questions posted and get a chuckle when I come across someone who made similar mistakes in their first brews as I did...

    DOH !! - First Brew

Ok first off relax. Have a home brew, of craft brew since this is your first batch. I am assuming by reading this thread that you are fermenting in clear glass. Also that you are brewing a stout. This being the case it is supposed to be very dark. In many cases even amber beers appear black when...

    Clairity?

I cold crash my beer for 24-72 hours. Depends on the type of beer. Larger beers longer time. Normal refrigeration temps are fine. If you can get low 40's that's great. I don't know if there is a set temperature just cold enough to chill the beer and separate the excess yeast to the bottom. I am...

My beer seems a tad bit watered down

I agree with the above post however did you take original gravity and final gravity readings? I am curious to know what they were. It's possible that A low final gravity is contributing to a thin mouthfeel and therefore a watery beer.

    Another NEWB

Your lucky a plugged airlock and open stopper was all you got. I had a carboy top explode in my closet while fermenting a batch of barley wine! Talk about a giant mess.

    Secondary Needed?

[ The two beers I brewed are a Double IPA OG of 1.08 and a Porter OG 1.056. Are either of these big beers that need to be racked to a secondary? TIA There is a lot of debate about secondaries however in my personal and non professional opinion they are not necessary. I have brewed...

WTB 15.5 Gallon Kegs in Northern California.

Haha. Probably not ahead just planning I guess. I have been deployed for the last year and am about to be home so I have had lots of time to dream about better systems. My brother has been brewing in my stead and I can't wait to get back to it. You can believe my first beer back will be a home...

WTB 15.5 Gallon Kegs in Northern California.

Thadius856 Thank you for the education it was very helpful. I currently have two Keggles. One has a Weldless ball valve and a Weldless thermometer. The other simply has the valve. I will definitely go with the three ports on my new Keggles. I will check out the links you posted as well. I am...

    DOH !! - First Brew

Forgive me if this was mentioned but I didn't have time to read the whole thread. While temperature is an important part of fermentation light is the beer killer. Make sure that your beer is not exposed to light when it is fermenting, aging, or bottle conditioning. The light (sunlight and uv...

all grain and kit cost comparison

The major difference is price. I am assuming that by kits you mean ones containing extract either dry or liquid. If that is the case extract is more expensive than grain. I typically brew 10 gallons however for five gallon batches ( when I dont buy my two row in 50lb bulk) I can expect to pay...

    Clairity?

I had a similar experience with my friends. They were overly concerned with sediment in the bottles. There are three ways to overcome this without kegging or using a beer gun to fill your bottles with pre-carbonated beer. 1) educate your friends on how bottle conditioning works. Explain how...

    New to Brew

+2 I was given this book when I purchased my first home brewing kit and I still reference it today over 200 brews later. It's a book you can grow with. It discusses the brewing basics but also has sections on all grain and mashing. Additionally the quick reference sheets for ABV according to...
