Homework done but still low mash efficiency: Bad grain crush?

With my LHBS, I had the opposite issue. They tend to cater to BIAB and crush too fine for my equipment. I get great efficiency, but at the expense of a very slow mash recirculation and occasional stuck sparge. I borrowed a mill from a friend, it was not very consistent, but I got better...

For me with 11-12 lbs of grain that comes out to less than 1/2 cup water out of about 5.5 gallons normally in my mash. Probably not enough to worry about, but I will keep it in mind when measuring.

Got my kegco 3 roller mill (see https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=542542 - Edit: noticed I had the wrong link better one is here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=500657). Seems very nice for half the price of the MM3. I did a few tests with gap and settled on 0.038, but...

In my quest against scorching I ran thinner mashes (1.98 qts/lb which was damn near capacity for me). What I found was that this raised my efficiency, but it cost me time to get the conversion. It seems a double edged sword. The thinner mash worked better with recirculation and lautering and...

Just wanted to follow up on this issue. Even with an element controller I was still having some scorching issues. After working with Nathan on this issue, I ended up swapping out the original small BIAC's higher density element with a lower density foldback. Nathan was a big help on this and...

Is oxidation during mash a real concern?

Thanks all for the confirmation. I remain in the don't worry about it camp. Cheers!

Is oxidation during mash a real concern?

I am just getting back into brewing from extract and partials to all grain. I've always been very weary of preventing hot side oxidation after the boil. It seems there is some debates on this already and I don't want to get into that. With all grain, the mash is an additional point to introduce...

Just found this today. They make custom lengths. I wonder if they would make one straight on the TC side so you could insert it in one of the top ports. Would be perfect. http://www.norcalbrewingsolutions.com/store/Tri-Clover-1.5-Inch-Custom-Whirlpool-Arm.html

I cannot seem to find the final results to this in this huge thread. I was hoping to avoid it, but looks like I need to get a grain mill as I am having issues with stuck mashes when I load my small up to capacity. I tried a second slotted false bottom and this let less through, but still sticks...

Mine did not come with a temperature controller or chugger. I got the chugger when I ordered and a temperature controller after. You absolutely must get a temperature controller for it or you will get scorching. One with a full power bypass switch is great. I have this one...

I've noticed that on my small BIAC where I do not have contol over the heater (on full or off) it can easily scortch. This is especially true when just starting the mash because particles fall through and sit on the heater and may burn. And going with a lower mash volumn to compensate for the...

I was thinking that I would just pressurize it a bit with co2 before dumping the trub or crashing. Anyone tried this? Just need to figure out how to connect the co2 - probably will see if I can find and airline quick connect. Don't see a good way to connect a corny keg gas in post.

Arrived today. Was very well packed. I thought I'd share just how much comes with this system - the inventory list on the site just does not do it justice. In addition to the vessel on the floor, *everything* on the table was included (Extras: 2 hop baskets, the chugger pump and an aeration...

Just ordered a small BIAC with a chugger and aerator! Thanks all for your posts here - it really helped make the decision. :mug: @MeetsCriteria - I see you are also in Madison. Perhaps we could meet up sometime and share notes? Now to plan out the first brew. Luckily only a bit over a week...
