    Belgian Pilsner malt...straw?

So I just did my 3rd all grain batch and I noticed some straw material in the Belgian Pilsner malt I ordered. It wasn't a ton but more than I've seen in other grain bills. Is this usual for this grain type? It was a Patersbier so the grain bill was 9 lb of Belgian Pilsner malt. I always...

    Holy sediment batman!

This is interesting. I have a 6 in the fridge. I want to check it now to see if I can harvest some of that Belgian yeast they use. I didn't notice a crazy amount of bottle yeast last time I got some. This is one of my favs from Peace Tree btw.

    AHS made my day!!

They gave me a 10% off coupon after I was affected as well by that certain issue. Too bad I never used it cause I was still a bit salty about the whole thing. I might have to give them another shot.

    Temp Swings

I have not seen any documentation that would lead me to believe short term changes like this would have any negative effect on your cheese.

    First hard cheese

This is what the final product looks like off of 4 gallons of farm fresh milk. This is from a double batch and the cheese is pressed into a 6 inch wheel. Weighs about 3 pounds. I did skim most of the cream for ice cream (almost a gallon from a 5 gallon bucket) and made ricotta afterward from...

    What IA beers to try?

+1. Hop Wrangler is pure awesome. They have a nice taproom as well, and are not that far from Des Moines, about a 35 min drive depending on where you are. Peace Tree Brewing Co 107 West Main Street Knoxville, IA 50138

Pump for finished beer/wine? A hand truck?

If you have the room I recommend installing a dumbwaiter. It's pricey but may pay for itself by not having chiropractor bills from throwing your back out. http://www.ameriglide.com/item/ameriglide-express-dumbwaiter.html?ref=navside

    Straight Razor Shave!

Learning to shave straight razor is a good skill to have when you wear a beard for winter and want to go clean for summer. A nicely stropped blade is key to clear cutting 4-6 months worth of facial forest. For those of us who have remaining facial hair, I like the products from...

    First cheese- FETA! (with pics)

I did exactly the same thing on Saturday with 2.5 gallons of fresh milk I got from a brew club buddy. Straight from the udder is the way to go for sure. I got about 2.5 lb of Feta waiting to be brined and made about a cup of ricotta from the cooked whey. A quart of skimmed cream went to make...

    Who's smoking meat this weekend?

I have a split rack of spare ribs and six turkey legs in my gas smoker to be ready about 5 tonight. The tips are going in some mustard greens I just picked from the garden. I'll vacuum seal and freeze the turkey legs in pairs for bean soup this fall. They keep forever frozen and sealed this...
